Sydney will be the host city of the 59th Congress of the International Society of Paediatric Oncology (SIOP) 2027 as well as the 39th World Congress of Audiology (WCA) in 2030.

The SIOP congress is anticipated to attract 2,200 paediatric cancer specialists from across the world to Sydney over four days, generating $7.7 million in direct expenditure to the local economy. The WCA is expected to attract 1,000 delegates over four days and is estimated to be worth $5.9 million in direct expenditure. Both events will be held at the International Convention Centre Sydney.

SIOP was established in 1969, by a group of specialists at the Institut Gustave-Roussy in Paris, with the mission to advance the study and care of children with cancer. This goal was expanded to include the advancement of basic research as well as clinical studies, the inclusion of nurses, other health professionals and parents, and the organisation of teaching and outreach programs to improve childhood cancer care in underdeveloped communities.

Australia is a leader in the paediatric oncology field with ZERO Childhood Cancer Program, the most comprehensive precision medicine program for children in the world and Sydney’s Minderoo Children’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre (opening in 2026), the southern hemisphere’s first children’s comprehensive cancer centre.

“Collaboration is key to improving outcomes for children’s cancer and has been the bedrock of advancing the field for decades,” Kids Cancer Centre director and bid leader, Dr Richard Mitchell, said.

“Hosting the annual World Congress in Sydney will allow us to build new collaborations with the international community, leading to more therapies and better outcomes for Australian children with cancer. It will also allow us to showcase Australia’s amazing research and cutting-edge clinical care, and an opportunity to share our knowledge and skills with the international community.”

AudA president, Dr Barbra Timmer, said AudA was delighted to open an important opportunity to showcase regional audiology innovation, research, practice and industry including local technical tours of state-of the art-facilities, while fostering global ties.

“The International Society of Audiology’s decision to award Sydney 2030 opens up the world stage to our region to deliver a world-class scientific program that showcases our research, innovation and clinical leadership while driving connection across the world to benefit global hearing health,” she said.

BESydney CEO, Lyn Lewis-Smith, added: “We are incredibly proud that Sydney will be hosting these business events of immense value and significance for the global healthcare community. They are powerful vehicles for change that impact the lives of many globally.”

Tourism Australia managing director, Phillipa Harrison, said supporting Business Events Sydney’s successful bid to host the Congress of the International Society of Paediatric Oncology via the Business Events Bid Fund Program presented a great opportunity for Australian tourism.

“Given the importance of business events to our tourism sector, we are so pleased to be supporting this latest event win for Sydney through Tourism Australia’s Business Events Bid Fund program,” she said.
