Bid to raise $250,000 to medivac severely injured Australian woman back from Bali

The family of an Australian woman found unconscious with severe facial and head injuries in Bali, is trying to raise $250,000 to medivac her back to Australia for further treatment.

Rebecca Ode, a 36-year-old from Newcastle who had worked at SeaWorld on the Gold Coast as an entertainer, was hospitalised on Tuesday with a brain haemorrhage, shattered eye socket, broken collarbone and shoulder after being found on the side of a road on Nusa Lembongan, an island south of the main island.

Ode was then transferred by boat from Nusa Lembongan to Bali and then to Ngoerah General Hospital in Denpasar. She underwent 14 hours of surgery to stop the bleeding in her brain and attempts to save her eye.

The former Seaworld entertianer had had moved to Bali in January this year following the death of her father.

“No one knows what happened to her,” brother-in-law Jesse Wilton told news.com.au. “We have no idea how the injury happened… there was no alcohol… and the extent of her injuries is quite traumatic.”

“She has haemorrhaging on the brain and has a fractured cheek and jaw almost beyond repair,” Wilton said. “She will lose one eye if not two and has titanium plates in collar bones.”

A GoFundMe page has organised for Ms Ode.

“Bec needs the best health care possible as soon as possible which means bringing her home,” Wilton wrote on the page. Hospital bills have already surpassed $60,000.

Ode’s mother Shari and sister Jordyn are by her side in Bali, he said.

“Once there is clearance to get her onto a plane, it’s expected a flight to Sydney and transfers to Newcastle to be more than $120,000. Once home Bec is likely to have a long journey of rehabilitation. We are estimating in will be close to $250,000 just to get back to Australia.”

“It will be one step at a time, but an expensive journey, if we all pull together we can make a big difference. If you can, please donate today, every bit will be greatly appreciated!”

He sister Jordan told Today Show that they were still unsure how or why she came to be injured.

“We certainly have a lot of questions,” she said. “Unfortunately, we don’t have any answers at this point in time. We are focusing heavily on the biggest outcome here, which is to get Bec back into Australia, so that we can actually have her reevaluated.

“We’re extremely grateful for the surgeons who’ve done here for her up until now. Of course, there’s a language barrier here. So, we are hoping that the sooner we can get her home, the sooner we can have an understanding of as to where she’s at and what sort of road we have a head for her for her recovery.”

The appeal has so far raised $170,000.
