Sunshine Coast Domestic Visitors Reaches New Record High
The Sunshine Coast recorded its highest ever domestic visitor numbers, attracting 3.4 million arrivals to the year ending March 2017, a rise of 6% and contributing $2.06 billion in visitor expenditure to the economy. The results were announced today by Tourism Research Australia in their quarterly National Visitor Survey (NVS).
The 6% growth rate was reflected alongside the positive national Australian domestic growth figure of 3.1%, and the Queensland State average of 4.3%. Interstate visitors grew by 14.7%, with 452,000 New South Wales visitors producing a 17.6% growth rate. Interstate travel is set to grow even faster following the announcement yesterday by Virgin Australia that they would be increasing direct flights from Sydney to Sunshine Coast Airport from 23 July, and from Melbourne to Sunshine Coast Airport from 3 September.
The data released today recorded a total of 12.5 million nights across the region up 7.6% with the average holiday stay of 4.3 nights, up 0.1% of a night.
The Sunshine Coast continues to be a popular destination for business events with 230,000 business visitors recorded to the year ending March 2017. Business events have emerged as a dynamic growth industry for the Sunshine Coast. The positive economic impact generated from increased business events has escalated bed nights and presented a lucrative flow on effect for the local business economy.
Umapped Releases API for Collaborative Travel Itinerary Management Platform
Umapped are releasing an Application Programming Interface (API) for its award-winning collaborative itinerary management platform. The Umapped API is systems-agnostic, enabling travel brands to extend their existing systems and data sources in a new way that drives efficiency and incremental revenue. The API aggregates reservations data and content from multiple sources into a unified mobile itinerary, helping travel brands stay engaged with their customers throughout the travel journey.
The API enables travel brands to streamline their document delivery processes and communicate with their customers in real-time, sending relevant and personalised offers within their mobile itineraries. The API has numerous benefits, with its foundation connecting fragmented data from multiple systems in a plug-and-play fashion to deliver a personalised mobile itinerary experience to travellers.
Brands also benefit from greater flexibility and interactivity, including 2-way group messaging capabilities. In addition to itinerary document delivery, the integration of the Umapped API allows travel brands to unlock the power of Umapped’s proprietary offer management system which identifies suggested offers for missing segments within an itinerary. Travel brands can choose to either plug in their own bookable content, or utilise content that Umapped has integrated through its supplier partnerships.
New Rail Plus service delivers a luggage free Paris
Rail Plus have unveiled an exclusive new luggage storage and transfer service in Paris that gives passengers the freedom to fully embrace the City of Lights. Customers using the service are greeted upon arrival by train or aircraft in Paris by a concierge who collects their bags and delivers them to their hotel at a convenient time – which can range from check-in on the same day to one, two or even three days’ later.
At check-out, the concierge collects the bags and then delivers them to the train station or airport in time for departure. Rail Plus Commercial Director Ingrid Kocijan says the new service allows customers to make the most of their time in one of the world’s most exciting cities.
“As soon as the concierge relieves customers of their luggage they can start enjoying Paris, rather than lugging suitcases around for hours while waiting for their hotel check-in,” says Kocijan.
“And when it’s time to depart, they can hand over the bags and enjoy all the city has to offer – whether its strolling through the Louvre, relaxing in cafes or shopping in the city’s stylish boutiques – until it’s time to board their train or flight.”
The service – which customers can use on arrival and/or departure – must be booked through Rail Plus seven days prior to luggage pick-up. Prices range from $61 for two pieces of luggage for same day delivery, to $129 for five pieces of luggage stored for three days.

Australians’ Love Affair with Peru shows no Sign of Slowing Down as Travellers Navigate towards Unconventional Paths
Australians’ love affair with Peru continues to grow according to the latest figures revealed by PromPerú showing a 3.1% increase in the number of Australians visiting the South America icon in 2016 compared to the previous year. Peru welcomed a record breaking 3,744,461 international visitors in 2016, with Australian visitor numbers reaching 42,870. For 2017, figures are showing no sign of slowing down and Peru is expecting “a sustained growth from the Australian market for 2017” according to PromPerú.
According to Latin America specialist Chimu Adventures’ co-founder Greg Carter, this figure was helped by an increase in air seats from all major Australian cities, increased competition on the South America routes and competitive airfare prices.
On the back of increased accessibility and affordability, Chimu has also recorded new trends in the ways in which Australians choose to explore the bucket list destination.Whilst there hasn’t been so much change as to what to see, there has undoubtedly been some rethinking on how to see it, according to Carter.
Responding to this trend, Chimu Adventures have created a new luxury tour package designed to introduce discerning travellers to the highlights icons of Peru whilst giving them the option to explore the paths less travelled in the most exclusive way.

“Summer roadtrip,” is this season’s dineL.A. theme – inviting guests to travel to and throughout the city eating their way across the various neighbourhoods and a diverse variety of cuisines. Tying into the roadtrip theme, Gary Baseman, Emmy award-winning creator of ABC/Disney’s animation series Teacher’s Pet and collaborator with luxury brand COACH, has designed a map featuring iconic Los Angeles landmarks and restaurants that will be included in the dineL.A. Roadtrip Guide. The guide also contains a list of participating restaurants divided by neighbourhoods, a helpful tool that diners can print from the dineL.A. website or pick up at visitor information centres throughout the city.
For a second season, dineL.A. once again partners with the California Avocado Commission to feature California avocado-centric dishes from some of the best chefs in the city. Summer dineL.A.’s specially-priced lunch menus are USD$15, $20, and $25, with dinner menus priced at USD$29, $39, and $49. American Express is also offering diners a way to save during the promotion. Diners can sign up and use their American Express card at all participating restaurants to receive USD$5 off their final bill of USD$25 or more.
Diners are encouraged to share their Summer dineL.A. experiences by participating in the Dine. Snap. Win. Instagram contest sponsored by American Airlines. Participants simply snap a photo of their dineL.A. dish, using the hashtag #DineSnapWin, and include the restaurant name to be entered into the contest where one winner will receive 100,000 American Airlines AAdvantage® miles.
