A search is underway for an Australian man who went overboard while sailing on Quantum of the Seas near Hawaii.

Royal Caribbean has confirmed the incident saying it happened while on its Trans-Pacific sailing.

In a statement it said the ship’s crew immediately launched a search and rescue operation and is working closely with local authorities.

The US Coast Guard is reported to have deployed a C-130 Hercules to conduct an aerial search.

A passenger on board told ABC News, the ship circled the area immediately after the incident.

“They put in a huge effort, search boats, search lights, buoys,” the passenger said.

Quantum of the Seas departed Brisbane on 12th April and is scheduled to arrive in Honolulu 28th April
