Brisbane’s Calile and Hobart’s Tasman make global top 50 hotel awards list
Brisbane’s Calile Hotel has been named No.25 and Best in Oceania in The World’s 50 Best Hotels while The Tasman in Hobart was ranked No.49 in the list for 2024.
The awards ceremony, announced in London, was attended by representatives from the 50 nominated hotels.
The World’s 50 Best Hotels list was created by The World’s 50 Best Hotels Academy, an influential group of more than 600 independent leaders, each selected for their expert opinion of the international hotel scene.
Capella Bangkok, overlooking Thailand’s Chao Phraya River, took out the top spot, climbing 10 places from No.11 in the 2023 list, and also clinching The Best Hotel in Asia 2024 title.
The list, according to organisers, promises to create the most egalitarian, useful and transparent hotel ranking system ever devised.
In attendance for the ceremony, The Calile Hotel co-owner Catherine Malouf said she was extremely proud to be again representing the Malouf family owners and employees of The Calile at such a significant celebration for the second time.
“To have been selected two years in a row marks a significant affirmation of The Calile’s place on the global hotel industry stage,” she said.
“This is a win for our team, our collaborators, our loyal guests and a win for Brisbane as a destination, and we are humbled to again represent Australia and be recognised as leading in the Oceania region” she said.
Also in London for the celebration hotel general manager, Chris Kemlo said, being included again was a great win not just for The Calile, but for Brisbane and Australian tourism.
“Being ranked in such a prestigious and highly recognised list for the second year reaffirms our ongoing commitment to providing the best possible guest experience. This achievement is a testament to our dedicated team, whose unwavering commitment to excellence and exceptional service drives us to continually exceed our guests’ expectations. Together, we embrace our values and strive to make every stay memorable.”
The Tasman Hotel general manager, Stephen Morahan thanked the judging panel and his team at the Luxury Collection Hotel.
“Tasmania has long been a jewel in Australia’s crown as a place to experience natural and epicurean delights, and fabulous warm friendly hospitality,” he said.
“The Tasman embodies these experiences and to be celebrated on the world’s stage is not only a testament to our offerings but those of the entire state. I would like to express my gratitude to The World’s 50 Best judging panel for the acknowledgement and, of course, thank our amazing team who offer the exceptional service every day that puts The Tasman a cut above the rest.”
The anonymous and neutral voting members of the Academy range from hoteliers to travel journalists, seasoned luxury travellers, hospitality professionals and other experienced globetrotters. While there are no set criteria for voters, there are strict voting rules ensuring the credibility and integrity of the list as a world-leading resource for discerning travellers.
“Our heartfelt congratulations go out to every hotel on the list, each of which has clearly made a lasting impression on our Academy of travel experts,” managing director of 50 Best Tim Brooke-Webb said at the opening of the awards event. “We hope 2024’s list inspires travel lovers to choose a truly spectacular destination for their next trip.”
The Calile
The Calile has proven that investing in and championing its location and community by providing a unique experience beyond that expected of a five-star hotel sets them apart in the industry. The Calile design embraces and advances an established tropical vernacular with the elevated light green stone-tiled pool and leafy pool terrace, outdoor dining, cabanas and sun lounges, key to embracing the climate.
Beyond the design, The Calile invests in creating cultural experiences for its guests and community, turning what is normally a space reserved for guests, into a civic space for like-minded individuals to come together to connect and learn.
The Tasman
Centrally located on Hobart’s iconic waterfront, The Tasman is an elegant heritage reconstruction of former state government offices that offers guest rooms and suites carefully conceived to showcase the architectural narrative of the site. Epicurean offerings include Peppina, a signature restaurant taking culinary direction from renowned Tasmanian chef, Massimo Mele, as well as Mary Mary, an intimate cocktail bar and spirits library that can be found nestled within the historical sandstone walls. Honouring the riches of its location, The Tasman celebrates Tasmanian history without sacrificing modern amenities.
In celebration, The Tasman has created the ‘Awarded & Rewarded’ package, with just 50 bookings available upon its release. Guests will receive a limited edition 200ml bottle of The Tasman Cask II Hellyers Road Whisky, aged for an impressive 20 years, as well as a choice between a guided wine or whisky tasting, breakfast and late check-out. Bookings are available from 18 September 2024, with a minimum stay of two-nights.
