Carnival Cruise’s Teresa Lloyd: ‘If sustainable fuel’s not available, we are not coming’

Carnival Cruise’s Teresa Lloyd: ‘If sustainable fuel’s not available, we are not coming’

The maritime industry cannot afford to continue playing ‘second fiddle’ to aviation in terms of sustainable fuel options, Carnival Cruises chief of strategy and external affairs officer in Australia, Teresa Lloyd, told delegates at the 26th Australian Cruise Association Conference (ACA) in Adelaide.

Speaking on the ‘State of the Industry’ panel alongside Royal Caribbean’s Gavin Smith, Norwegian Cruise Line’s Ben Angell and ACA’s Jill Abel, Lloyd was commenting on the current state of play in Australia which sees all available feed stock sent to be used as sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

Lloyd said that for cruise companies to be as efficient and sustainable as possible, they must be prioritised alongside aviation, not playing catch up to it.

“Our biggest issue is going to be future fuels,” she said, “if we don’t have fuel, we are not coming.

“The SAF and the renewable diesel that is the byproduct is something that we can use, but we are an absolute second thought.

“It’s not just us, it’s the entire maritime industry, but if we don’t have a solution, if governments don’t collectively back a maritime fuel solution, it’s game over for everyone.

“(The) maritime industry and cruise industry is really focused on achieving carbon intensity reductions in a very near time frame. We’re working incredibly hard sector to abate our carbon emissions, and finding those future fuels is going to be key.

Asked on the consequences of sustainable fuels not being available, Lloyd said, “we will go where the fuel is available.”

“So, if the fuel is not available, unfortunately, in the future, we simply won’t be able to (cruise to certain destinations).”

The 26th ACA Conference & AGM ‘Steering Ideas to Success is being held in the South Australia from until tomorrow, 6 September.

The event, sponsored by South Australian Tourism Commission and Flinders Port Holdings, has a focus on the ever-changing cruise market in the region, and encourages ideas that continue to advance cruise as a sustainable and vital pillar of Australia’s visitor economy.
