Discover sun kissed Kedah and the beauty of Langkawi’s geo-park
Explore the rice bowl of Malaysia, Kedah, a region known for its sun-kissed emerald waters, verdant rainforests and tropical islands.
Here’s our tips on how to spend a few days in this incredible Malaysian region:
Kedah Mainland
Just an hour’s flight from Kuala Lumpur, the rustic and rural state of Kedah inherits the beauty of rolling rice fields and cultural traditions. For the curious Aussie who seeks for the lesser-known, mainland Kedah has undiscovered attractions waiting to be seen.
From the tallest tower in the city, Alor Setar Tower, visitors can catch a glimpse of Kedah’s scenic surroundings through the 360-degree panoramic views from the observation deck. On a clear day, the legendary Mount Jerai – Kedah’s tallest mountain – can be spotted, as it rises from the sparse surrounding paddy fields.
If you’re after something more adventurous, head outside of the city grounds to Sungai Sedim tree top walk, roughly 30 minutes by car from the Kedah city centre. Here, one can experience one of the longest ‘stroll-in-the-air’ canopy walks, weaving through 925 metres of rainforest, home to birds-eye views of the forest floor and many exotic birds and wildlife. To get your adrenaline pumping there are plenty of ways to challenge your fears with other activities like white-water rafting, abseiling and flying fox also located within the region.
Langkawi Island
Escape the jungles and paddy fields of mainland Kedah and explore the emerald isle of Langkawi, a tourist hotspot for abounding water-sports, luxurious resorts and eco-tourism sites. Due to its sheer popularity as a destination, Langkawi is easily accessible by flights from numerous capital cities in Malaysia or via ferry from Kuala Kedah.
In the heart of the city lies Eagle Square, one of the main landmarks on the island which gets its name from the red-backed eagles that rule the sky above the island. Here, visitors can find lush greenery and fountains as well as a 12-metre-tall statue of an eagle which is equally impressive and intimidating. Also, on the island is the Skybridge and Cable Car, where guests can travel over 700 metres above sea level to get their glimpse of the most serene views of Langkawi on offer.
In 2007, UNESCO officially declared the Langkawi archipelago as a recognised Geopark. Also known as the Langkawi Geopark Kilim Karst, the area spans around 100 square kilometres and is rich in natural beauty.
The geopark is home to towering limestone cliffs, caves and rocky outcrops surrounded by ancient jungle, winding mangrove reveries and many forms of wildlife from monkeys, otters and birds to fauna such as the Meranti and Keruing rainforest trees.
Thanks to its coastal location on the north-western peninsula and the Malacca Strait, the island is a hub for water sports enthusiasts who travel to the destination to make the most of its idyllic waterfronts. Options for ocean lovers are plentiful, from summer classics like banana boat rides to the thrill of jet skiing across the 99-island archipelagos, as well as incredible snorkelling at Pulau Payar.
In 1987 the Malaysian government granted it duty-free status to increase tourism to the area and boost the local economy. Aside from the usual duty-free products, various locally handcrafted items such as batik clothing, woven crafts, wood carvings and sea shell products are on offer.
Langkawi’s latest resort!
Recently opened in February 2023, the Parkroyal Langkawi Resort is an idyllic seaside oasis, nestled on the pristine Pantai Tengah beach. Positioned on the longest beach in the region, the hotel boasts 301 modern guest rooms, suites and seven spacious (and exclusive) villas which all feature a private plunge pool and direct access to the beach.
Dining options include Lancava, a specialty restaurant that marries fresh, locally sourced produce with the nuanced flavours of south-east Asia. Cassia is the hotel’s all-day dining restaurant with both buffet and à la carte menus and an extensive selection for children. Ocean View Lounge is a luxurious swim-up bar with unobstructed views of the sand, sea and sky paired with handcrafted cocktails with a lively atmosphere that carries well into the night.
