ExploreGB conference wraps up

The ExploreGB conference at Ascot Racecourse (pictured) has concluded after two days with guests brought up to date on the state of inbound tourism into Great Britain. Attendees were also briefed on the latest happenings throughout the country, with individual presentations on upcoming events in England, Scotland and Wales.

The coming year was firmly in focus over the two-day conference with major announcements across England taking centre stage. “2015 is set to be an exceptional year for England. Across the country, the nation will be hosting major sporting events, marking historic anniversaries, showcasing landmark exhibitions and celebrating exciting new openings,” VisitEngland’s head of marketing and partnerships Stuart Heath said.

Perhaps the most significant English event of note is the 2015 Rugby World Cup, which will be hosted across 10 cities and commences on September 18. Also in the spotlight were the 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta and a series of tours that celebrate the issuing of the famous decree. The 50th anniversary of Winston Churchill’s death, the 125th anniversary of Agatha Christie’s birth and the 175th anniversary of shipbuilder Cunard were also highlighted.

Great Britain’s offering from 2016 and beyond was also a key discussion point and VisitBritain’s marketing manager Joss Croft highlighted further key anniversaries that will be celebrated next year. Included are the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death, the 200th anniversary of Charlotte Bronte’s birth, the 100th anniversary of Beatrix Potter’s birth and the 100th anniversary of Roald Dahl’s birth. A series of events will be held around these milestones, while Croft also highlighted 2016 as Scotland’s Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design.
