FOMO gets travellers packing

Fear of Missing Out or ‘FOMO’ as we call it, is a leading cause for choosing to travel.

A 2015 survey of 4100+ Australians by lastminute.com.au found that one in four Aussies have booked a holiday after suffering from social media FOMO.

Travel photos of panoramic landscapes and sun-kissed bikini selfies with hashtags like #fromwhereyoudratherbe are making friends and families so jealous, they are booking holidays of their own! And when we say holidays, these aren’t just ordinary holidays – people are finding bigger and better destinations than what they’ve seen on social.

“Today, people don’t wait to listen to friends’ holiday stories on their return, instead, we live and follow their journey in real time” lastminute.com.au spokesperson, Louise Ryan said.

The survey found Gen Y as the worst offenders- of the 4100+ Australians surveyed, one in three aged 18-34 years admitting booking a holiday as a result of social media envy.

Gen X wasn’t far behind in this trend, with one in five aged 34-54 years booking a trip after getting FOMO.

Calming waters, thirst-quenching coconuts, mountain treks and hidden ancient cities – social media is creating travel bookings and endless bucket lists for the envious, adventure-seeking traveller.
