Hotel cancels 30 rooms for couple’s wedding due to NYC migrant crisis

A Florida couple had their New York wedding plans interrupted after the hotel they had booked cancelled plans because it had to take in migrants.

Mifsud and Gary Moretti, 37, planned to marry at Lippincott Manor with 160 guests set to attend the happy day.

The couple’s guests had 30 rooms booked at The Crossroads Hotel in Newburgh, about 20 minutes away from the venue. Some of the couple’s closest guests planned to stay at the hotel and they had organised transportation to and from the party, according to the New York Post.

“We signed a contract. We had a legal contract to have those rooms,” Moretti said.

“We just wanted everybody to be safe and have a good time.”

But things didn’t go according to plan after they learnt that the Crossroads was going to accept migrants from NYC as the city struggles with an influx of immigrants.

The pair contacted the hotel to ask about their reservation, but they were told to call Choice Management, which overseas the facility.

“We were on hold for 45-plus minutes and were ultimately told, ‘We can’t do anything for you, bye bye,’ and we were hung up on,” Mifsud recalled, adding only one guest had gotten notice of the cancellation.

“Some people have cancelled already,” she said.

“It’s bittersweet.

It puts a damper on it because we’d love for those people to come.”

Mifsud said she believes that the hotel is not housing migrants out of kindness, but for the money.

A spokesman for Choice Hotels, the brand under which the Crossroads operates, told the New York Post, “All affected guests will be contacted for assistance with rebooking their upcoming reservations.”
