How much does Hong Kong love Australia?

Australia is a hot ticket item for travellers from Hong Kong, swooping in to take the silver medal on biggest draw card.

According to the GfK Consumer Travel Tracker, 17% of Hong Kong travellers say they’ve booked a trip down under in the past three months, compared to 18.7% booking holidays to Japan and 5.6% to New Zealand.

When jumping on a plane to Australia, over half of HK travellers have a two to three month forward booking window, compared to a one to two month booking window when travelling elsewhere in Australia.

Two thirds of travellers from Hong Kong plan getaways of between four and seven nights, driven by trips to Asia over public holiday weekends.

When it comes to package holidays, Australia reigns king, with 48% of HK travellers purchasing a bundled flight/accommodation package, and 1/3 of those choosing Australia and NZ as their final destination.

Online travel agents, at 48%, were the most used source for researching a trip, followed by magazines at 43%, and regular travel agents and airline websites both at 36%.

Word of Mouth is still a valued and reliable source for a third, who sought recommendation from ‘friends/family/colleagues’.

The most common international travel experience types booked by Hong Kong travellers during the survey period were gourmet and culinary (3%), rest and relaxation (23%), and luxury travel and shopping (19%).
