Marriott International appoints Jason Nuell area vice president for Australia, New Zealand & Pacific
Edited by Travel Weekly

Marriott International has appointed Jason Nuell, a long-standing Marriott Associate, to the position of area vice president – Australia, New Zealand & Pacific (ANZP) to lead the growth and performance of Marriott International’s footprint in the region.

Following the retirement of Sean Hunt, Nuell has relocated from Marriott’s Asia Pacific excluding China (APEC) headquarters in Singapore to Sydney, to oversee and drive the financial performance of 46 operating hotels, and a further 20 pipeline properties across the region.

“I congratulate Jason on his appointment to lead Marriott’s growing Australia, New Zealand and Pacific portfolio of hotels and resorts,” Neeraj Govil, chief operations officer, APEC said.

“Jason has held several senior corporate and market leadership positions for Marriott International for over 20 years and has a proven track record on innovation, talent management and driving strong performance. His global mindset, and passion for delivering customer and associate experiences, ideally position him to lead our ANZP operations.”

Nuell joined Marriott in 2003 as the director of food and beverage at the Surfer’s Paradise Marriott Resort (now JW Marriott Resort & Spa Gold Coast). His career with Marriott International has included a range of senior leadership roles across southeast Asia, China, India, the United States of America and Europe.

Nuell was also awarded Marriott International’s Global General Manager of the Year Award while serving as the General Manager of the Renaissance Phuket Resort & Spa in 2011. He returns to Australian soil from Singapore, where he held the role of Vice President Customer Experience and F&B Design Services APEC. In this role, Nuell has been guiding the formation of Marriott’s APEC Brand Team where he led the brand strategy, management, activation and design for 30 brands across the region.

A brand expert within the Global brand management of Marriott International, Nuell has led complex, organisation-wide projects. His expertise includes developing insights, strategies and innovations for the company’s lifestyle brands; including AC by Marriott, Moxy, Renaissance, Edition and Autograph Hotels. He was also Marriott’s first Brand Advocate in Europe, leading the local brand strategy and initiative executor for both Managed and Franchised properties.

“I am looking forward to returning home to Australia to lead Marriott’s expanding footprint in the ANZP region. After 20 years across 4 continents, a key focus will be to use this experience to build upon the solid pipeline of hotel agreements signed, work effectively with our property management teams to develop brand awareness and guest experience, and to drive Owner returns across the portfolio,” Nuell said.

Marriott International has opened six new hotels in the ANZP region since March 2023 (in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, and Port Moresby) and there are another 20 agreements signed, taking the anticipated total hotel stock in the region to more than 60 properties by 2028.
