Qantas proposes new monthly subscription model for lounge membership

Qantas proposes new monthly subscription model for lounge membership

Qantas has proposed a new ‘pay as you go’ subscription model for its airport lounge as the airline looks to “improve the customer experience.”

This would mean that travellers would visit Qantas’ lounges for a monthly fee, rather than the current one-year, two-year and four-year packages on offer between $600 and $2000 on top of the $99 joining fee.

This update was revealed in an online survey distributed among the Qantas Research Panel, according to Executive Traveller. The survey said that “access will be provided to Qantas-branded lounges only, for a period of 28 days with an auto-renew if not cancelled.”

The Daily Telegraph reported that travellers would not be able to bring guests into the lounge, access selected partner or associated lounges global (such as the recently opened oneworld lounge in Seoul), get last minute upgrades or additional baggage allowances. These perks, however, would be permitted for yearly-based Qantas Club members.

A Qantas spokesperson said: “We’re always looking to improve the customer experience. As part of this we often conduct surveys with our customers asking for their feedback on a range of ideas and topics, some of which we go on to develop and others we don’t.”

Qantas’ move to improve the customer experience comes as the embattled carrier announced $230m worth of investment into customer improvements after the exit of former CEO Alan Joyce.

The group said, in September 2023, that this is aimed at addressing customer ‘pain points’ – namely, better contact centre resourcing and training, more seats that can be redeemed with Frequent Flyer points and more support when operational issues arise.

Qantas is also looking to hit the pedal on some initiatives already underway, such as re-platforming the airline’s app.
