Qantas has assured customers that industrial action in Melbourne and Brisbane today will have minimal impact to customers travel plans as engineers walk off the job.

Roughly 300 Qantas engineers will strike around Australia over a 24 hour period today (Wednesday), the latest move in a fight for wage increases.

Strikes today follow similar action at the end of September with Qantas again promising minimal impact at the time.

Qantas expects ‘minimal impact’ to domestic network as engineers strike for better conditions

“Our teams have worked hard to put contingencies in place and we don’t expect the industrial action in Melbourne and Brisbane today to have any impact to customers,” a Qantas spokesperson told Travel Weekly.

“There’s been some industrial action by engineers since late September and so far we’ve been able to successfully ensure it hasn’t resulted in any flight delays or cancellations. Our teams continue to do a great job helping customers get to their destination safely.

“We had a number of meetings with the unions prior to the industrial action. We want to continue to engage with them to find a way forward but they have chosen to take action. Our preference is to reach an agreement that includes pay rises and other benefits. This includes annual pay increases, increased apprentice pay, as well as new career progression opportunities and more advanced training.”

The stoppage, limited to Alliance Union members, is expected to have minimal impact due to the small number of engineers involved. The company remains confident in its ability to manage operations without affecting customers’ travel plans.
