Ryanair plans to fly 300 million passengers annually by 2034

With hundreds of new planes on order, Ryanair has high hopes to fly the most passengers in the world each year by 2034, and the CEO is quietly confident.

Ryanair ordered a three-hundred-strong fleet of new short-haul aircraft, worth around USD$40bn (AUD $60bn) from Boeing earlier this month, though some experts are questioning if enough Europeans will fly due to growing climate concerns and increased taxes.

“I think the thesis that there’s no more growth in Europe, [and that] Europe is completely tapped out, is wrong,” CEO, Ryanair, Michael O’Leary told the Financial Times.

“As long as we don’t do something stupid — which is a daily challenge in this industry — we will continue to wipe the floor with every other airline in Europe,” he said.

In the year until March 2023, Ryanair transported 170 million passengers, a 13 per cent increase compared to pre pandemic numbers. The Irish low cost carrier rising as a dominant player in the market as its competitor, Wizz Air carried around 44 million passengers throughout 2022.

Ryanair currently has 544 aircraft across its five subsidiaries, comprised of 410 Boeing 737-800’s, 104 Being 737 MAX’s and one Boeing 737-700 Jet

Just like most budget carriers, Ryanair sticks to a single-type fleet to minimize operational costs. Currently, the airline has a total of 544 aircraft in its fleet across its five subsidiaries. The airline’s fleet comprises 410 Boeing 737-800s, 104 Boeing 737 MAXs, and a single Boeing 737-700 jet. The average age of Ryanair’s fleet is 9.4 years.
