Skyscanner data reveals cost of living can’t squash the demand for travel

Excited multi-ethnic friends looking away against buildings. Happy males and females are standing on bridge over river. They are traveling together in city.

Skyscanner has revealed that while Aussies are continuing to combat rising costs of living, they aren’t compromising on travel as we inch closer to peak periods.

At the beginning of the year Skyscanner’s 2023 Travel Trends Report saw that while Aussies are more price-conscious than ever, travel is set to remain a priority for the year ahead.

“Skyscanner data reveals that despite the latest rate rise, economic headwinds and flight fares, there is a steady increase in bookings from February 2023 onwards, with a 17 per cent increase in bookings between May to June,” travel expert, Skyscanner, Jarrod Kris, said.

“In fact, this year we’ve seen a year-on-year increase in bookings for the months of March, April and May when compared to 2022.”

While living expenses fluctuate, Australians’ determination to travel persists, with Skyscanner seeing a steady increase in bookings from February 2023 onwards, including a 17per cent increase in bookings between May and June.

In fact, this year Skyscanner has seen a year-on-year increase in bookings for the months of March, April and May when compared to 2022.

With the European summer upon us, Skyscanner can also reveal that the entire month of June recorded the highest booking numbers in 2023 for those travelling to France, and when compared to same time last year (June 2023 vs June 2022), we see a 96 per cent increase in bookings from Australia to France.

“Additionally, Queenstown was highlighted in the Skyscanner 2023 Travel Trends Report as being one of the best value destinations for Aussies, and it’s great to see our friendly neighbour still standing strong in terms of value they bring to Aussie travellers who are looking for competitive fares without compromising on an exciting adventure-filled holiday,” Kris, said.

“New Zealand remains a steady and much-loved destination for Aussies, with booking volume remaining healthily consistent when looking between March and June, seeing no significant drops or increases.

“For Aussies looking to bag a bargain, Skyscanner’s comprehensive tools can assist them in achieving the best deal for them.”

Kris’ top tips for those looking to holiday this year:

  • “Be price smart: Setting up price alerts will ensure you’re the first to know as prices drop with any additional discounts or added supply. You can mark a flight you’re interested in and Skyscanner will email you whenever the price goes up or down.”
  • “Consider all options: 2023 saw new destinations rise in popularity as corridors shone a light on some surprising gems. Swapping your usual break in Bali for Fiji could be an unexpected delight. So let the algorithm decide with a search to ‘Everywhere’, which will present a plethora of options based on your travel dates, all ranked by price.”
  • “Mix & Match to save $$: Not just a summer fashion trend, mix and matching the airlines and airports you choose to fly with and from can seriously cut costs. Fares don’t have to be booked as returns, look at flying out with one airline and back with another, or out of one airport and back into another, can save money.”
  • “Take the red-eye: These flights tend to be less desirable and thus less expensive and less crowded. That means you’re likely to score a deal and be able to stretch out comfortably across empty seats.”
