Smartraveller has made an update to its travel advice on Turkey following a shocking earthquake that has reportedly killed over three thousand people.

Authorities say the tremor occurred roughly 10km underground and has effected 10 cities across the southern parts of the country.

Smartraveller’s update reads: “On 6 February, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake occurred in Nurdagi, central Turkey, close to the city of Gaziantep. A 7.7 magnitude earthquake followed in Elbistan, Kahramanmaras.

“Be prepared for aftershocks. Monitor local media for advice and follow directions of local authorities. Contact your friends and family as soon as possible to let them know you’re safe.

“If you have significant concerns for your welfare, or that of another Australian, contact the Consular Emergency Centre on 1300 555 135 in Australia or +61 2 6261 3305 outside Australia.”

The quake, also affecting parts of Syria, has been labelled likely to be the deadliest in the decade with a rupture measuring over 100 kilometres between the Anatolian and Arabian plates.

Smartraveller has also noted the ongoing threat of terrorism in Turkey following the burning of a Quran which has sparked uproar among terrorist organisations and has warned those in the country.

“Following recent Quran-burning incidents in Europe, retaliatory attacks by terrorists targeting places of worship or areas frequented by Westerners are likely. Remain vigilant and where possible avoid places frequented by Westerners, including diplomatic premises and places of worship,” the site said.
