As we near the end of the year (and look forward to all those boozy Christmas parties) it’s time to also look forward – to travel in 2018 that is.

Luckily, you can stay ahead of the game and on top of the trends – because we’ve got the top five travel trends for 2018. Pack your bags, and thank us later.

From pets to food, family and cultural background, sports and the supernatural, the Wot’s Your Journey? Report by wotif.com has taken a deep dive into the many factors that influence how and why Aussies travel. So here ya go:

Travelling on a shoestring

Okay, maybe not completely on a shoestring, but the rise of affordable travel options over the next five years, including tumbling airfares and new routes by low-cost carriers will impact the destination choice of four out of five Aussie travellers.

That’s 80 per cent! And good news for everyone on a budget.

Climate Change

What’s going in our lives, and in the wider world will continue to affect the destination choice of many Aussie travellers in 2018.

Environmental factors like climate change can impact where 40 per cent of Aussies decide to holiday. Think visiting the Great Barrier Reef, the Maldives and Antarctica whilst they’re still there.

Business trips are. Not. A. Holiday.

As more and more Aussies take business trips, they’re becoming less fun and more exhausting.

A third of Aussies have recently travelled for work – and 25 per cent of all travellers have done it internationally.

So for their actual holidays, more and more Aussies are keeping it local – heading to a QLD resort or the aforementioned Great Barrier Reef – or taking a road trip down the Hume Highway.

Doing it fur the kids

In probably the least surprising news for 2018, people care about their pets – enough to plan holidays around their needs.

Over 40 per cent of Aussies take shorter holidays because of pets, or holiday less frequently.

But the best bit? In 2018 Wotif predicts pet friendly accommodation will continue to rise, that not only allow pets but cater to them with beds, dog walkers and even chef prepared room services items.

Partying > fitspo

Look. Holidays are about letting loose – not gorging on kale and going for runs at 5am. Seriously.

And a ton of Aussies agree – only five per cent chose a destination for coconut water and squats, despite the massive wellness mania.

And in true blue form, Aussies are almost twice as likely to choose a holiday location for its partying potential. Now that’s a holiday we’ll be booking real soon.
