United Airline CEO’s pay doubled in 2023 to AUD $27 million

The CEO of United Airlines, Scott Kirby, saw his salary double in 2023 to USD 18.6 million (AUD 27 million). This was up substantially from the USD $9.8 million he received the year before.

Whilst Kirby’s base salary was only USD $1,075,000, it was boosted by a further $10.7 million in stock awards and $6.6 million in non-equity incentive compensation, Skift reported.

The increase is largely due to the end of regulation added due to Covid. During the pandemic, airlines received a USD 25 billion bailout. Due to the terms of the CARES Act, the pay rises that execs could receive were limited. The bill dictated that compensation be capped at $3 million plus 50 per cent of the amount their compensation exceeded $3 million in 2019.

United was subject to the CARES Act until April 1, 2023, but has now returned to its pre-Covid pay structure. Back in 2019, Kirby took home $16.8 million as president.

Under Kirby, United has fearlessly pursued growth at both the premium and budget ends of the flying spectrum.

In recent years the airline has placed some of the biggest aircraft orders in history and has launched several new international routes.

Kirby’s expansion plans have been dogged by delays in delivery and certification with certain Boeing aircraft. As a result, United opted to pause pilot hiring and is also asking some pilots to take unpaid time off in May.
