Will Boom Overture become the first supersonic passenger jet since Concorde?

The aviation world lit up this week when a video of the Boom XB-1 hitting supersonic speeds hit the internet.

Boom is an aviation company at the forefront of modern aeroplane technology and design with big ambitions.

It sees a future where supersonic flights are the standard for long-haul travel, rather than a luxury reserved for a select few.

The aircraft catching the most interest is the Overture, a commercial style plane designed to carry up to 80 passengers with a range of 7,800km.

Overture has the potential to revolutionise air travel thanks to its top speed of Mach 1.7 (around 2,100kmh), nearly twice as fast as current commercial jets.

Overture will run entirely on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and its advanced engine technology aims to minimise noise pollution, addressing a key challenge of past supersonic travel.

Boom has reportedly secured significant airline commitments, with United Airlines ordering 15 aircraft (plus an option for 35 more), American Airlines purchasing 20, and Japan Airlines investing $10 million alongside a pre-order of 20 planes.

The business also is working in partnership with Northrop Grumman to explore potential military applications, further expanding Overture’s reach.

The first flight is planned for later this decade, with commercial service possibly starting in the 2030s.
