Australian interest in visiting China has sky-rocketed following news that Aussies could be granted a new 15-day Visa.

Last week Prime Minister Anthony Albanese met with Chinese Premier Li Qiang. One of the things to come out of the meeting was the introduction of visa-free travel to China for Australians – a benefit that is currently offered to New Zealand and a number of European countries.

“We agreed to provide each other with reciprocal access to five-year multiple entry visas for tourism, business and visiting family members — so as to better facilitate personal exchanges, China will also include Australia in its Visa Waiver Program,” Qiang said.

Within half an hour of the news being shared, Trip.com data showed that China-related keywords surged by 80 per cent among Australian users.

This spike in interest also translated to an increase in bookings – holidays booked to China increased by 20 per cent on the day of the announcement.

The news seems to have accelerated an existing trend. The data also showed that flight search volumes for Australia to China was already up 154 per cent between the months of January to May compared to last year.

Wendy Wu Tours enthusiastically welcomed the chance to reignite China as a travel destination following the landmark decision.

Company founder Wendy Wu called the announcement a game-changer for Australian travellers and the tourism industry.

“As the number one China touring specialist in Australia, New Zealand, and the UK, we are thrilled about the opportunities this presents for travellers,” she said. “Today’s announcement is very welcome news. This visa-free policy will make short trips more accessible and straightforward, and we’re positive it will encourage a robust return to destination China for Aussie holidaymakers.
