Lake Macquarie’s popular Living Smart Festival will light up the lakeside between September 23-25 in one of the country’s biggest sustainable-themed events.

Just 90-minutes from central Sydney, kick off the school holidays by heading to the largest saltwater lake in the Southern Hemisphere to motivate yourself and future generations to live smarter, healthier and cleaner.

The free event will include Dinner Under the Stars on Friday night, a dreamy night dishing up a sustainably-sourced three-course vegetarian menu from The Wilderness Chef ($121 – $132 per person); the Living Smart Festival on Saturday at the lakeside Speers Point Park; and the new Living Together Festival on Sunday, celebrating multicultural communities with a range of workshops, demonstrations, world music, international cooking classes and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and language sessions.

Saturday’s line-up will include markets packed with handmade products and local produce, roving performers, workshops with Gardening Australia host Costa Georgiadis, morning yoga by the lake, a popular native plant giveaway, a First Nations Zone showcasing weaving, art, dance and bush tucker, a Green Thumb Zone with backyard beekeeping, worm farming, urban gardening and more, a Kids’ Zone with face painting, craft and a petting zoo, an Eat Zone conducting fermentation classes, sourdough sessions and more, and an Upcycle Zone to discover how to turn trash into treasure – such as DIY dog toys and pet beds.

Whether you want easy ideas to live more sustainably at home, ethical meal ideas, pre-loved pieces to revamp your wardrobe, or a fun-filled day out with the family, the Living Smart Festival is for you.
