Two Australian train journeys have been named among the world’s top 15 most beautiful train journeys according to a new eye-tracking study from InsureandGo.
The research analysed a series of landscapes across multiple iconic routes around the globe, looking at how quickly each scene captured attention and how long it held viewers’ gaze, to determine which rail journeys are truly the most visually captivating.
The Kuranda Scenic Railway, which takes passengers between Cairns and Kuranda, and the Ghan, which travels between Adelaide and Darwin, ranked 12th and 15th, respectively.
The research analysed multiple landscapes from each train route, tracking viewers’ eye movements to see which scenery was the most eye-catching of all, and which held their attention the longest.

Japan’s Sagano Romantic Train
The data reveals that Japan’s Sagano Romantic Train is the world’s most visually appealing train route. Both sides of the train have incredibly scenic views of the Hozugawa River valley and Arashiyama’s lush mountains, and tickets sell fast. Those looking for a breezier experience can also choose to sit in carriage no.5 which has no glass windows or roof.
One of the most famous train journeys in the world, Switzerland’s Bernina Express, was named the second most beautiful in the study. Passengers speed through 196 bridges and 55 tunnels, traverse Alpine peaks and Mediterranean landscapes and pass over the iconic Landwasser Viaduct, a UNESCO World Heritage structure.
Completing the top three is a second Swiss train, the Glacier Express, which takes eight hours and connects Zermatt with St. Moritz. With more awe-inspiring views of the Swiss Alps, the train has panoramic windows all the way up to the roof, offers a 5-course meal, champagne and a bar, and has specially designed wine glasses with a slanted base, keeping the wine level as the train climbs up to 2,033m above sea level.

The World’s top 15 train journeys
For Europe, the spots are secured by routes in Switzerland, Italy, Scotland and Austria. Scotland’s West Highland Line whizzes past 260km of unparalleled views of Scottish lochs framed by dramatic Highland scenery, while Austria’s Semmering Railway, which was built in the 1800s, takes passengers along breathtaking and winding mountain passes from Gloggnitz to Mürzzuschlag.
Taiwan’s Alishan Forest Railway and Brazil’s Serra Verde Express take passengers through dense forests and biodiversity hotspots, while long-distance experiences like Canada’s Rocky Mountaineer and South Africa’s Blue Train combine a bountiful supply of beautiful panoramic views with high levels of comfort.

From the vast Australian outback aboard The Ghan to the high-altitude landscapes of Peru’s Central Andean Railway, the rankings show that sustainable, comfortable and incredibly scenic views can be found by train in any corner of the world.
“Travelling by train is a huge draw for many holidaymakers but specifically those looking for slower and more sustainable ways to explore,” InsuranceGo head of communications Letitia Smith said.
“With so many beautiful routes around the world, we wanted to reveal once and for all which journeys are the most visually appealing. We hope the research provides lots of inspiration for your 2026 travels.
“Of course, as scenic as any trip can be, unexpected events can happen, so it’s always a smart idea to sort your travel insurance as soon as you’ve booked so your trip is protected and you can simply focus on enjoying it.”
