A second woman found submerged in a pool at a far north Queensland resort has died in hospital.

The women, both from Asia, were found at the resort in White Rock on Thursday, and police said they could not swim.

Relatives made the difficult decision to turn off one woman’s life support at the weekend.

The second woman died early on Tuesday morning, police said.

“They just couldn’t swim, it’s that simple,” a spokeswoman told AAP.

Paramedics and bystanders tried desperately to save the pair, administering CPR before they were rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

They had decided to take an early morning dip and, moments before the tragedy, asked a staff member to take their photo.

But when the worker returned, he found them both under the water, forcing him to dive and drag them out.

Cairns Senior Constable Russell Parker told The Cairns Post an investigation is ongoing, and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

“This is indeed a tragic incident involving visitors to our region, and one which highlights the importance of water safety and just how vigilant we all need to be with water-based activities,” he told the newspaper.
