Travel experts at 1st Move International have looked at the interest shown for dupe destinations around the world by analysing search data, Instagram and TikTok data to reveal the top trending holiday destination dupes.

If you’re not sure what a ‘destination dupe’ is, and don’t worry this journalist wasn’t sure either, a destination dupe is a cheaper version of a place you want to go.

Perth doubles up as the perfect alternative to Sydney, with a dupe destination score of 7.01. Considered the next Sydney, Perth is rising in popularity with over 20,300 in the last year. Renowned for its beauty, Perth has racked up over 12.4M Instagram posts and has 1.2M TikTok views.

Valencia is named the world’s best destination dupe, and top alternative for Barcelona, with a dupe destination score of 9.24/10.

Despite being the third largest Spanish city and racking up over 74,000 Google searches, Valencia is relatively undiscovered compared to its more popular counterpart. Holidayers visiting Valencia can enjoy a comparable experience to Barcelona while spending approximately 25 per cent less on essentials such as groceries and local transportation, making it an ideal destination for those on a budget.

Kuala Lumpur emerges as Singapore’s most popular alternative, with a dupe destination score of 7.92/10.

Kuala Lumpur offers a diverse and vibrant street food scene that rivals Singapore’s renowned culinary offerings. While Singapore has beautiful beaches, Kuala Lumpur is in close proximity to stunning Malaysian islands with picturesque beaches. Interest in visiting Kuala Lumpur scores highly across the board, with over 16M Instagram posts for the location.

Further Insights:

Baku is the number 1 destination dupe on social media, with a collective 36.98 million posts on Instagram and TikTok.

Taipei has seen the highest surge in search interest between 2022 to 2023, increasing by a notable 57 per cent.
