Captain Cook Cruises Sydney is marking its 55th year of operations, with celebrations kicking off last month with exclusive events and competitions on the way.
Part of the SeaLink Marine & Tourism family, the renowned cruise operator is celebrating more than five decades of unforgettable experiences on Sydney Harbour, paying tribute to its rich history while looking ahead to a sustainable and innovative future.
Excellence since 1970
Since its founding in 1970 by Trevor and Geraldine Haworth, Captain Cook Cruises has become an iconic name in Australian tourism. Originally a family-run business, the company is now part of the SeaLink Marine & Tourism network, a subsidiary of the publicly listed Kelsian Group, Australia’s largest integrated multi-modal transport and tourism operator. Despite this expansion, Captain Cook Cruises has maintained its commitment to high-quality service, innovation, and a deep respect for Sydney Harbour’s cultural and natural heritage.
“As we celebrate 55 years, we reflect on how Captain Cook Cruises has become a part of so many special memories for our guests,” said general manager Nick Lester reflecting on the milestone.
“While our 50th anniversary celebrations were delayed due to COVID, this milestone is an opportunity for us to honour a rich history and unwavering dedication to providing world–class experiences while respecting the cultural and natural heritage of Sydney Harbour.”
Over the years, Captain Cook Cruises has welcomed millions of guests, including notable figures such as Pope Benedict, President George Bush, and the Spice Girls, solidifying its place as a key player in Sydney’s tourism industry.
Embracing the future with innovation and sustainability
Looking ahead, Captain Cook Cruises remains dedicated to sustainable tourism and cultural enrichment. Collaborations with Indigenous leaders, including respected Gadigal elder Aunty Margaret Campbell, have deepened the understanding of Sydney Harbour’s Indigenous history. New smartphone commentary in seven languages and a Sydney Harbour map featuring Gadigal place names have been introduced to enhance the visitor experience.
Artist Alysha Menzel has also created a bespoke artwork depicting the stars that guided Captain Cook to Botany Bay in 1770, which will be displayed on the flagship vessel, Sydney 2000. Meanwhile, ongoing sustainability initiatives, including a partnership with the SeaBin project to reduce plastic waste, further demonstrate the company’s commitment to protecting the harbour’s natural beauty.
Celebrating 55 years
To celebrate 55 years, Captain Cook Cruises Sydney is launching a series of competitions throughout 2025. Guests can participate in the Cruising Down Memory Lane social media contest by sharing their favourite photos and memories for a chance to win $550 in Cruise Cash each month, with a grand prize of $5,500 awarded at year’s end.
Captain’s Club members will also have multiple chances to win, with monthly draws for $550 in Cruise Cash and a Grand Finale prize of $5,500 for those who cruise in 2025. Special events, exclusive offers, and commemorative memorabilia will also be available for guests throughout the year.
As Captain Cook Cruises Sydney celebrates 55 years, the brand remains committed to delivering unforgettable experiences on one of the world’s most beautiful harbours while paving the way for a more sustainable and inclusive future in Australian tourism.
