Caravanning in Australia is experiencing a remarkable surge in popularity, attracting a broad range of people seeking the freedom to live on their terms, Canvas8 data shows.

As the cost of housing continues to climb, caravanning offers a flexible and affordable alternative that allows individuals to explore the vast Australian landscape while retaining the comforts of home. This movement has been further accelerated by the ongoing housing crisis, with many young Australians feeling priced out of the traditional housing market. In 2023 alone, Australians took a record 15.3 million domestic caravan and camping trips, spending a collective 60.7 million nights on the road, as they embrace the joys of van life.

Max Bidstrup, a full-time alternative living YouTuber and caravanning enthusiast, explains how caravanning became a way of life for him and many others: “I grew up a country kid that always loved to go camping.” Over the years, he upgraded to bigger vehicles and caravanning “became [his] safe, familiar place whilst being in foreign countries and needing a sense of home.” His story resonates with many Australians, especially the younger generations who now see caravanning as a desirable lifestyle rather than just a holiday activity.

The COVID-19 pandemic played a pivotal role in bringing the caravan resurgence to the forefront, as international travel restrictions forced many Australians to explore their own country. Dr. Rodney W. Caldicott, an international research scholar at Khon Kaen University, notes: “COVID triggered a mentality shift in people – ‘we’re going now because we may not be able to go next year.’” People started making decisions they had previously postponed which sparked a new wave of caravanning.

The demographic of caravanners has shifted, with a growing number of millennials and Gen Zers embracing the lifestyle, thanks in part to the rise of VanLife social media channels, particularly on TikTok. As at November 2024, Australia was the second most popular region for the #VanLife hashtag, with over 50,000 TikToks posted over the past three years, driving the trend further into the mainstream.

The Housing Crisis Fuels the Caravan Boom

Australia’s ongoing housing crisis has worsened over the past decade, with skyrocketing prices and severe shortages making homeownership feel out of reach for many. The cost of buying a house has more than doubled since the mid-2000s, and now it takes an average of 11.4 years to save for a deposit, up from just 7 years in 2002. As a result, young Australians are increasingly prioritising travel over saving for property. A 2024 survey revealed that 71% of Aussies under 30 would rather spend their money on travel than buy a property.

Bidstrup highlights the financial reality many young Australians face: “I think with the rise of housing prices, [some] people are giving up on the dream of ever buying a house, finding it out of reach. Some of these people are choosing to spend their savings – which no longer go towards a house deposit – on taking time off and travelling, and investing in a van or caravan to do so.”

In addition to housing unaffordability, the increasing cost of living has forced Aussies to seek alternative ways to reduce expenses. For some, this means moving into stationary caravans in long-term parks, where they can pay more affordable rent or live rent-free.

Freedom and Flexibility: The Allure of Van Life

For many, caravanning represents more than just a lifestyle change; it’s a pursuit of freedom. The desire to escape the monotony of city life, as well as the responsibility-laden grind of traditional work culture, has led many to embrace a nomadic existence. As global instability and economic uncertainty grow, the dream of living life on the road has become an increasingly attractive alternative.

Dr. Caldicott elaborates that for older Australians, caravanning is about freedom after years of work and raising children. They’ve raised their kids, they’ve done their 40 years of service to the world, and now they want freedom. “You’ve got electricians, motor mechanics, carpenters, bricklayers, tilers, computer engineers – you name it. We have very skilled people travelling this country.”

With remote working becoming more commonplace, younger Australians are increasingly opting to work on the go, making the digital nomad lifestyle a mainstream choice. Almost one in three Australians have worked as digital nomads, and 41 per cent of those who haven’t say they would consider it. Even families are adopting this lifestyle, with many choosing to ‘roadschool’ their children while travelling.

Technology and Innovation Fueling the Caravan Revolution

Technological advancements have also played a key role in the caravanning boom. The development of satellite internet technology, like Starlink, has enabled digital nomads to work from remote locations, while the latest advancements in solar power and renewable energy have allowed caravans to be equipped with high-tech features, offering greater comfort and convenience than ever before.

Bidstrup explains the shift in caravan amenities: “The level of luxury people are living in inside vans has increased dramatically.” Solar panels, lithium batteries, hot water systems, and even toilets and showers are now standard in many caravans, providing a level of comfort that was once unimaginable.

Nick Morris, UK-based founder and Managing Director of Canvas8, said, “As caravanning continues to evolve, so too does the way people think about travel and lifestyle. With technological innovations pushing the boundaries of comfort, and the ongoing search for freedom and flexibility, the caravanning lifestyle shows no signs of slowing down. For many Australians, this way of life offers not only an affordable alternative lifestyle but also the chance to live life on their own terms – wherever the road may take them.”
