Celebrity Cruises is making a decisive play for the European river cruise market, unveiling an expansive new destination program alongside a major fleet and itinerary rollout set to reshape the category.
At the core is a four-pillared “destination discovery” concept, designed to push beyond traditional shore excursions and deliver more immersive, locally led experiences. The Storyteller Series and Skillmaster Series anchor the program with included experiences hosted by residents, artisans and cultural insiders, while the Keys to the City Series introduces a tech-driven, self-guided approach tailored to individual interests. Rounding it out is the Celebrity Takeover Series, offering once-per-sailing, one-off events designed as bucket-list highlights.
The move signals a clear shift toward experiential travel, with Celebrity positioning its river product around deeper cultural connection and personalisation across every port. The program will be available across all 2027 and 2028 sailings, as well as pre- and post-cruise stays in key gateway cities including Prague, Budapest and Amsterdam.
Celebrity Cruises is developing a VR experience to showcase the new river cruise ships, with Celebrity Cruises’ Giles Hawke, vice president of international in town alongside Tim Jones, vice president and managing director of Australia and APAC, to showcase the new offering via a virtual reality tour at the Celebrity Cruises office in North Sydney.
Travel Weekly was super impressed as a guinea pig for the VR experience that will be rolled allowing agents and customers to explore the vessels in detail before they are physically available.

Ten new ships
Beyond the experiences, Celebrity is scaling rapidly. The line has committed to 10 new ships, expanding its European river fleet to 20 vessels by 2031. The first ship, Celebrity Compass, is already under construction, marking the brand’s official entry into the sector. It is also represented in the VR renders.
Demand appears to be strong out of the gate, with the inaugural 2027 season selling out in under six minutes. In response, Celebrity has opened its 2028 program early, featuring more than 160 sailings to over 50 destinations – an 80 per cent increase in European coverage compared to its launch year.
The expanded deployment includes a broad mix of itineraries across the Rhine and Danube, as well as seasonal sailings such as Dutch tulip cruises and Christmas market journeys. New ports and deeper regional access are also on the agenda, including Lower Danube itineraries with overnight stays in Bucharest.
Pre- and post-cruise land programs are another key focus, with multi-day extensions offering small-group touring, premium accommodation and concierge services, aimed at delivering a seamless end-to-end experience.
With a strong pipeline of river newbuilds, rapid itinerary expansion and a clear emphasis on curated, experience-led travel, Celebrity River Cruises is aiming to position itself as a serious contender in Europe’s increasingly competitive river cruise landscape.

Bringing ‘product’ to life
Celebrity Cruises is doubling down on its European river ambitions, pairing an expansive new destination program with rapid fleet growth – and leaning into immersive tech to bring the product to market before its first ships even launch.
At the core is a four-pillared “destination discovery” concept, designed to move beyond traditional shore excursions. The Storyteller Series and Skillmaster Series focus on locally led, hands-on experiences, while the Keys to the City Series introduces a tech-driven, self-guided approach. The Celebrity Takeover Series rounds it out with once-per-sailing, bespoke events positioned as bucket-list highlights.
The approach reflects a broader shift towards deeper cultural immersion, with noting the program is “all about bringing people properly into the heart of the destination… and actually really immersing [them]… so they feel like they’ve actually been somewhere rather than seen somewhere.”
Importantly, Celebrity is also tackling one of the biggest challenges for an as-yet-unlaunched river product: visibility. With no ships in market until 2027, the line is turning to virtual reality to bridge the gap – particularly for long-haul markets like Australia.
“I mean, it’s really wonderful… it’s a real walk through of the ship,” Hawke said of the VR experience. “It allows agents and customers to actually see what the river cruise ship is going to be like. They’ll be able to walk around the ship and see all of the venues. So they’ll get a real sense of the product.”

The VR tool, first showcased at a trade conference in Amsterdam, is already drawing strong interest.
“We had people queuing around the round the trade fair to actually get to experience the VR,” Jones said, adding that it provides a workaround for the fact “we haven’t got product yet that people can go and see”.
For the Australian market, the technology is expected to play a particularly important role.
Give the tyranny of distance and the fact that Australian advisors don’t often get to see river ships, the VR experience provides a prime opportunity to introduce the product without having to fly to the northern hemisphere.
The VR platform showcases the full ship experience – from staterooms to dining venues and top deck and the dynamic colour palette – which allows agents to explore based on their own priorities.
“If someone’s particularly focused on dining, they can spend a bit more time looking around the dining venue,” Hawke said “If they’re really interested in what the cabin is going to be like, they can spend time there.”
Onboard, for passengers, interactive maps, audio guides and video content will lead guests off the beaten tourist path to interest-led locations where stationed local hosts provide behind-the-scenes access and exclusive experiences at working studios and craft sites to create moments of surprise and delight.

Strong local demand
Beyond the sales tool, Celebrity is banking on strong underlying demand, particularly from Australia, where river cruising is already well established.
“There’s a big number of customers who travel from here to Europe to do river cruises,” Hawke said. “The market for Celebrity Cruises in Australia is there… and you just marry the two together, and it’s a perfect combination.”
Early indicators support that confidence. The inaugural 2027 season is sold out, prompting an accelerated rollout of the 2028 program, which features more than 160 sailings across 50-plus destinations – an 80 per cent increase on launch year capacity.
Fleet expansion is also moving quickly, with 10 new ships on order, taking the total to 20 vessels by 2031. The first, Celebrity Compass, is already under construction.
Onboard, Celebrity is bringing familiar elements from its Edge Class ocean ships to river, alongside new concepts tailored to the category. These include more flexible dining, with a move away from traditional set times.
“We’re moving to 24/7 service… pick your own options that are always available,” Jones said, adding this would “start to open up that customer choice”.
Shoreside, the smaller scale of river ships – capped at around 172 guests – is enabling more curated experiences.
“You can do this curated excursion in a way that’s more challenging to do with an ocean cruise,” Hawke said, noting the line is building its programs in-house rather than “buying off-the-shelf excursions that every river cruise line will buy”.
The result is a product aimed squarely at Celebrity’s existing customer base rather than a new demographic.
“Our river cruise customers will look very much like our ocean cruise customers,” Hawke said. “The same sort of 45 plus demographic, people who are curious, people who are adventurous. So, we don’t expect to see anything very different to what we see already for our river cruise. We’re not going to try and find different people to those who travel with us already.”
Itineraries span the Rhine and Danube, alongside seasonal highlights such as Amsterdam tulip sailings and Christmas markets, with some voyages featuring overnight stays in key destinations. Pre- and post-cruise land programs in cities including Prague, Budapest and Amsterdam further extend the experience.
With strong early demand, a fast-growing fleet and a clear focus on immersive, experience-led travel – backed by innovative sales tools like VR – Celebrity River Cruises is positioning itself as a serious new force in Europe’s river cruise sector.
