An 11-year-old girl has died after falling from a cliff in Tasmania during a family holiday.

Tasmania Police said in a statement that the child fell approximately 10 meters down a cliff at Sand River conservation area in Buckland and received critical injuries.

“The Westpac Rescue Helicopter and police units from Sorell and Orford responded to the scene, which is not accessible by road,” police said.

“It appears the child was walking along the edge of the clifftop when she slipped and fell. CPR was administered, but sadly the child died at the scene.”

The child was visiting Tasmania from Victoria with her siblings when the incident occurred.

Acting inspector Michael Foster told ABC News the incident was a tragic way to end a family holiday.

“[It’s] horrific any time of the year but around Christmas, holidays it’s even worse … it’s just tragic,” he said.

Sand River is a popular destination for rock climbing and bouldering, with sandstone crags between 10 and 30 meters high.

Police are appealing to anyone who was in the area on Friday afternoon to come forward and assist in preparing a report for the coroner.
