A marina that partially collapsed into a lake south of Newcastle will soon be demolished.
The two-storey building at Pelican Marina slumped into Lake Macquarie on Monday morning, two months after a structural assessment report failed to identify the risk of collapse.
It housed several businesses including a popular restaurant and wedding venue at the marina, Milano’s On The Lake.
As the building continues to fall into the water, tenants of the Crown Land site have been told it is too unsafe to enter and will have to be demolished.
“The demolition now is to make it safe,” Department of Primary Industries regional operations director Marwan El-Chamy said on Thursday.
“As we demolish it we may know more, but there will be a detailed review of what happened, why it happened, how it happened.”
Tenants, including one elderly woman who lived at the marina, can’t enter the site, but Mr El-Chamy says workers will try to salvage some of their property during the two-week demolition.
A boom will be set up to prevent any debris going into the water and there is a 30m exclusion zone for boats.
