The Environment and Land Court in Narok has officially dismissed a legal petition seeking to halt operations at The Ritz-Carlton, Masai Mara Safari Camp.
The Ritz-Carlton said the decision provide a definitive resolution to recent litigation and confirms the lodge’s standing as a fully compliant, environmentally responsible operator in the region.
The luxury safari camp is built along the Sand River and legal action was triggered over its location as it is within a key wildlife migration corridor in the Maasai Mara National Reserve.
Conservationists and Maasai leaders warned that the project could disrupt the Great Migration and erode traditional ecological knowledge and livelihoods.
But in the February judgment, the Court affirmed that the lodge had met all stringent environmental and regulatory requirements. Central to the ruling was the validation of the lodge’s Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) license, which was issued in May 2024. The Court’s decision effectively ends the uncertainty surrounding the petition, reinforcing that the lodge’s presence in the Mara is both legally sound and ecologically mindful.
The petition, which had sought to challenge the lodge’s right to operate based on environmental concerns, was thoroughly reviewed by the Court. The final judgment not only cleared the lodge of any non-compliance but also highlighted the value of local participation and sustainable development within the Mara ecosystem.
Ritz-Carlton said that the outcome was a significant win for both the environment and the people of the Mara “as it validates the property’s ongoing commitment to the community and ensures it can continue its mission of shared prosperity and conservation”.
“The common goal is to ensure the Mara remains a thriving, protected ecosystem for generations to come,” the operators said.

Transparent conservation
Addressing specific points raised during the legal process, The Ritz-Carlton, Masai Mara Safari Camp clarified key aspects of its design and location to ensure public and media accuracy:
- The lodge is situated four kilometers away from the primary migration points. Unlike traditional structures that may block movement, the camp was specifically built to ensure the natural flow of the Great Migration remains entirely unobstructed.
- The property is completely unfenced and elevated, allowing wildlife to pass underneath and around the structures without interference.
- The lodge operates one of East Africa’s most efficient solar-powered systems, utilising a 650kW solar farm, alongside a closed-loop water treatment system that harvests rainwater and recycles greywater.

Empowering the community
Beyond environmental compliance, the lodge continues to serve as a major economic engine for the region. Through the Lazizi Welfare Foundation, the lodge maintains a workforce with 90 per cent being Kenyans and more than 40 per cent coming directly from the Masai community.
The Foundation also manages a circular economy programme that transforms glass waste into upcycled gift items and provides direct educational support to local institutions.
Excellence and transparency are our guiding principles, at The Ritz-Carlton, Masai Mara This judgment reinforces their commitment to doing things the right way – for guests, for the culture, and for the land.
