Cruise operators are thinking on their feet as the looming threat of Cyclone Alfred has forced some to change course.
Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) and Carnival Cruise Line have both announced changes affecting upcoming voyages, including the cancellation of Brisbane port calls and alternative arrangements for impacted passengers.
Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL)
Norwegian Cruise Line updated passengers on Norwegian Sun stating the safety of guests and crew remains a top priority.
“Due to the forecasted impact of Cyclone Alfred on Brisbane during our scheduled call on March 5, 2025, we have made the difficult decision to cancel our stop and sail directly to Cairns, ensuring a smoother journey,” a note to passengers shared with Travel Weekly read.
“We understand this change may be disappointing, and we appreciate your understanding as we prioritize your safety. To enhance your experience, we have extended our visit to Airlie Beach, offering more time to explore the stunning Whitsunday Islands and the Great Barrier Reef.
“The revised itinerary now includes an additional day at sea instead of stopping in Brisbane. We will arrive in Cairns on March 6 for an overnight stay before continuing to Airlie Beach on March 8, giving you more time to enjoy the beauty of these incredible destinations.
Shore excursions have been automatically cancelled with full refunds issued.
Carnival Cruise Line
Pacific Encounter successfully arrived in Brisbane this morning as scheduled and is departing as planned. The ship had a marine pilot onboard during its most recent three-day voyage, allowing safe docking today.
“The safety of our guests and crew is our top priority as we continue to monitor Tropical Cyclone Alfred,” a Carnival Cruise Line statement read.
“The port is expected to be closed when Carnival Luminosa is due to return to Brisbane on Thursday.”
Key updates:
Carnival Luminosa is currently in Noumea, with guests advised to consider disembarking if they need to return to Brisbane urgently.
All guests onboard have internet access to make necessary travel arrangements and stay in touch with loved ones.
The ship will sail a safe distance from the storm to minimise guest discomfort.
Pacific Encounter has embarked on a 4-day voyage to Airlie Beach and is expected to call there on Thursday, pending further weather updates.
Guests will be kept informed of any further itinerary adjustments.
Greyhound Australia prepares for cyclone
Greyhound Australia says it will closely monitor the situation and updates from the state government, emergency services and Bureau of Meteorology.
“At this stage all scheduled Greyhound services will continue to operate,” a statement read.
“However please be aware that as Tropical Cyclone Alfred moves closer to the coast, and its potential impacts are more clearly understood, we may be required to cancel services for the safety of our passengers, team, and general public.”
