Nestled halfway between Sydney and Brisbane is Coffs Harbour, the subtropical hub of Northern New South Wales. The region is mostly known for The Big Banana tourist attraction that looms over the highway, but peel past the stereotype and you’ll find a unique destination that has diverse, natural surroundings and a relaxed pace to boot.
Coffs Harbour is a pin point on the Coffs Coast region, which means kilometres of sandy beaches lie on one side, while lush bushlands abound on the other. Venues and facilities throughout Coffs Harbour have been designed to utilise these natural drawcards, whether it’s through conferencing venues or accommodation options.
As part of a Coffs Harbour Tourism MICE famil, The Nibbler recently visited the sunny coast to sample first hand what the destination can offer the business sector. A number of the activities available are exclusive to the area and can cater for small to large group numbers.
A common theme from managers and operators over the three-day trip was the ‘point of difference’ they can offer clients. For instance, instead of being lectured about the product on offer at Bonville Golf Course, we were allocated a golf buggy and personally shown the conference attractions. Zipping past fruit trees and manicured grounds, we were shown a slice of the 250 hectare grounds where venues can be held on various parts of the course. Bonville is able to cater for groups of all numbers and can style the venue to suit a function, from cocktail parties on the Terrace Lawn to events on the 14th hole.
We were also immersed in the unique product offered at the Pet Porpoise Pool. Our cheeks were tickled by kisses from whiskery seals and our arms tightly hugged Bella the dolphin during an Ultimate Dolphin Swim. Being able to interact with the animals on such a personal level is a key highlight for participants. The Pet Porpoise Pool can arrange a number of functions to include interaction with the animals and can cater for groups of up to 150 people.
As Coffs Harbour is a regional destination, everything is within close proximity which reduces travel time between venues. Delegates also have the option of staying onsite at a number of properties that feature conference facilities. The Novotel Pacific Bay Resort is a resort that rolls a golf course, conference venues and activities into one. Clients can utilise spaces such as the deck that is built over the man-made lagoon or the courtyard area and take part in team building activities including Segway challenges with Time Out Xperiences.
While Coffs Harbour might not have the bells and whistles of major cities, it has character and a number of special products all located in stunning surrounds. It’s a place where delegates can escape the daily grind and enjoy the outdoors. Daily flights from Coffs Harbour are available to Sydney and Brisbane, with a weekly service to Melbourne.
