Domestic border restrictions force Rex to cut capacity

Regional Express (Rex) has announced reductions in its services to cities and regional communities that are affected by extensive state border restrictions and lockdowns.

The airline said domestic and regional routes on its network in NSW, Victoria, South Australia, Queensland and Tasmania will be either temporarily suspended or greatly reduced until the end of the tightened travel restrictions across these states.

Affected passengers who booked directly with Rex can go online to the airline’s automated COVID Refund Portal, which will return the money to the original form of payment within a few days for eligible tickets.

Rex has also advised travellers to “choose their airline carefully”, following a scathing report on travel refund processes by consumer advocacy group CHOICE.

The move by Rex to reduce capacity comes not long after the airline signed a letter of intent with a lessor for the lease of two Boeing 737-800NGs.

The two aircraft were expected to arrive in late August, increasing Rex’s 737 fleet to eight, and were scheduled to enter service on its domestic network in September.
