Emirates has completed the first installation of next-generation Starlink Wi-Fi on its flagship Airbus A380, marking another milestone for the world’s largest passenger aircraft.
The first Emirates A380 fitted with the upgraded connectivity system returned to Dubai this week after installation and certification works were completed in Newquay, UK.
The airline said the aircraft is the first A380 in the world to be equipped with Starlink technology, promising a major leap in onboard internet performance for passengers across all cabins.
Emirates was among the earliest carriers to introduce inflight internet, with first-generation systems previously delivering less than 1 Mbps of total aircraft bandwidth. The new Starlink setup, featuring three antennas installed on each A380, will increase available bandwidth dramatically and aims to deliver a “better than at home” connectivity experience while cruising at 40,000 feet.
Passengers will be able to stream content, browse, game and work using personal devices throughout the flight, with the service offered complimentary to all customers. Emirates also plans to introduce Live TV streaming via Starlink, initially on personal devices before later integrating it into seatback screens.
The A380 installation is particularly significant given the aircraft’s size and layout. Emirates said the double-decker superjumbo required a bespoke configuration capable of delivering more than 2 Gbps of total bandwidth across the cabin.
Compared with the carrier’s Boeing 777 fleet, the A380 features additional wireless access points and a third antenna to better support its larger passenger numbers. The airline said optimised inter-deck integration would help provide a seamless Wi-Fi experience throughout both levels of the aircraft.
Wider fleet rollout
The move forms part of a wider fleet rollout, with Starlink installations set to begin at Emirates Engineering facilities in Dubai. Emirates has already fitted 25 Boeing 777-300ER aircraft with the technology, while more A380 retrofits are scheduled through 2026.
So far, more than 650,000 Emirates customers have flown on Starlink-equipped services.
The connectivity upgrade also supports Emirates’ broader investment in the customer experience. The airline said 93 aircraft have now undergone full refurbishment under its fleet retrofit program, including the installation of Premium Economy cabins, refreshed Business and First Class products, upgraded Economy interiors and enhanced inflight entertainment systems offering more than 6,500 channels.
In mid-2025, Emirates also opened its US$8 million Centre of Hospitality Excellence, designed to train its 25,000 cabin crew in onboard service standards.
For Emirates, the addition of Starlink ensures the A380 remains one of aviation’s most recognisable and most technologically advanced passenger experiences.
