Emirates has begun installing a new adjustable headrest, called U-Dream, on Economy Class seats across its fleet, which the airline said was the first of its kind introduced by any carrier.
The multi-way adjustable headrest is designed to support the neck and head during sleep, with flexible side wings that fold inwards to cradle the head. It moves vertically and tilts to adjust for passengers of different heights. The headrest forms part of Emirates’ Z400 seat, developed with Safran Seats, and has been tested and verified against European Union Aviation Safety Agency standards.
The U-Dream is currently fitted on three A350 aircraft. Emirates said all of its A350s would have the headrest installed by the end of the year, with the airline’s fleet also including most of its Airbus A380s and Boeing 777s in the rollout. The headrest will also come pre-installed on the 270 Boeing 777X aircraft Emirates has on order.
From 2027, installation will extend to Emirates’ retrofitted A380 and 777 aircraft.
Emirates president Tim Clark said the airline wanted to improve comfort for Economy Class passengers on long-haul flights.
“The U-Dream changes the game if the person wants to sleep – by supporting the neck in full. No more neck pillows needed,” Clark said. “It’s another innovation that shows our commitment to customers.”
The leather headrest is designed to be wiped down and is cleaned after each flight. Emirates said cabin crew were trained to assist customers with adjusting it if needed.
