Emirates SkyCargo deployed its first converted Boeing 777-300ER Special Freighter into commercial service to meet rising global e-commerce and cargo demand.
A6-EBK was originally an Emirates passenger aircraft before it underwent a complex structural makeover for several months that includes a new main-deck cargo door, reinforced flooring, and advanced temperature controls for delicate cargo such as life-saving medications and bio-innovations. The aircraft has already entered commercial service and is moving goods across multiple regions through and to Dubai. The aircraft entered commercial service with a flight from Hong Kong to Dubai carrying over 100 tonnes of cargo.
“The induction of the first converted Emirates Boeing 777-300ERSF into operational service represents the next step in the expansion of our fleet and operational agility,” Emirates SkyCargo’s Divisional senior vice president, Badr Abbas, said. “We are optimising our fleet assets by converting older Boeing 777-300ER passenger aircraft to meet the growing demand for air cargo capacity to transport goods rapidly across the world.
“Combined with our growing fleet of Boeing 777-F production freighters, we have already been able to scale our global freighter network from just over 40 destinations in February this year to 62 destinations currently and growing. We are providing our global customers with scalable cargo capacity and ultimate flexibility and connectivity when moving cargo to and through our hub in Dubai.”
The refit process
Emirates SkyCargo’s team first removed the aircraft’s interiors including seats, overhead stowage, galleys and lavatories to accommodate cargo pallets. They also replaced the floor structure used for passenger transport with reinforced floor beams and a higher-capacity floor structure capable of supporting concentrated loads from heavy pallets and cargo handling equipment. The team then installed a cargo loading system consisting of powered rollers, locks and guides to let ground crews move large cargo units efficiently through the aircraft and secure them for flight.
The team was also required to install a large maindeck cargo door to meet one of the key characteristics of freighter aircrafts. Emirates SkyCargo’s team replaced large sections of the fuselage structure in order to create the large opening for the door.
More freighters in production
The group then fitted a barrier capable of withstanding impact up to nine times the force of gravity, consistent with regulatory and safety configurations in a production freighter. The team also installed advanced cargo monitoring system including smoke detection and fire suppression. They repurposed the passenger aircraft’s environmental control system to monitor and control airflow, ventilation, and temperature to support sensitive shipments such as pharmaceuticals and perishables.
After all the modifications, the conversion needed to achieve regulatory approval to show that the process met strict requirements around compliance with safety standards covering structural strength, systems reliability, fire protection and flight performance.
A6-EBK joins six Boeing 777-F production freighters that Emirates SkyCargo has already delivered since March 2026. The carrier is expecting a further four Boeing 777-F production freighters and one additional converted freighter later this year.
