Land tour operator Trafalgar will return to European river cruising after almost two decades and will introduce a mid-entry level “affordable” offering to the Rhine and Danube in the northern spring of 2026.
Sales to travel partners open today ahead of sharing with the general public, giving agents the chance to secure preferred sailing dates and cruises.
“It’s definitely a busy marketplace,” Toni Ambler, managing director AUS & NZ, Contiki, Trafalgar & Insight Vacations, told Travel Weekly adding that the launch is intended to meet an increasing demand from Australian and New Zealand guests from a much-loved brand.
“I think it’s led by consumer needs that people are really enjoying exploring the world on the rivers or exploring a lot of parts of world by river.
“One thing that we’re really excited about is we know from consumer insight, particularly the Australian, New Zealand market that we represent is that our travellers love to tour and cruise be that the ocean cruise or river cruise.
“So we were seeing the bundling happening anyway, and we know that it’s a longer journey out of Australia and New Zealand. They’re going for three to four weeks, and they were choosing to do a land-based trip and to do a river cruise or an ocean cruise.
“This is really an opportunity for us to kind of bring both worlds together under what is such a loved iconic Australian brand, being that with Trafalgar.”
While Trafalgar will offer cruise, it doesn’t want to cannabalise its sister brand.
“I think we in terms of where we’re pitting ourselves against the concept, this is certainly a very different product to Uniworld, our sister brand, which is, as you know, very intentionally aimed at that luxurious high end of the market.
“We’re certainly wanting Trafalgar to feel more approachable and more sort of for your everyday traveller.”
But that does not mean Trafalgar River will skimp on customer service, utilising Uniworld’s 5-star training to elevate an existing fleet.
Trafalgar begins with two new journeys, an 8-day cruise along the Danube on the 128-passenger Trafalgar Reverie and a 10-day cruise along the Rhine on the 128-passenger Trafalgar Verity.
Brand familiarity and same philosophy
“We’ve always been about making it easy for travellers to connect with the heart and soul of every destination. Now, we’re bringing that same philosophy and unmatched experience – valued by our travel agent partners, to Europe’s iconic rivers,” TTC Tour Brands deputy chief executive officer, Melissa DaSilva, said in the official statement.
“Our strategy is simple: unlock the best of Europe’s rivers through trusted Trafalgar touchpoints including our much-loved ‘Be My Guest’ and ‘MAKE TRAVEL MATTER’ Experiences, giving travellers a fun, new way to river cruise that is as enriching as it is responsible. And oh yes, giving agents the chance to sell it first.”
Both journeys feature signature Trafalgar moments including Local Specialists offering deep destination insights, opportunities to connect with locals through ‘Be My Guest’ encounters and at least one MAKE TRAVEL MATTER Experience that supports United Nations Sustainable Development Goals; plus onboard entertainment – from regional performances to in-house baking demonstrations; wellness options from yoga sessions to complimentary bicycles for off-shore excursions, and delicious regional dining.
River cruise journeys are open for booking now for sailings beginning 11th April 2026.
- Travel Weekly will be offering a more in-depth interview with Ambler and Trafalgar general manager of sales, Andrew Young, in the coming days.
