Cruise Traveller hosted Australian travel trade on an immersive voyage with Mitsui Ocean Cruises, offering a first-hand look at a product that is distinctly Japanese and refreshingly different within the ultra-luxury cruise sector.
As exclusive Australian representative of the premium Japanese cruise line, Cruise Traveller brought together more than 40 travel advisors and media representatives on a unique famil sailing Japan.
Mitsui Ocean Cruises made its debut in December 2024 with the launch of the Mitsui Ocean Fuji (formerly the Seabourn Odyssey), a vessel that blends heritage, innovation and elegance across all-suite accommodation.
Accustomed to targeting a domestic Japanese audience, the cruise line is capitalising on growing interest in the Australian market to expand its global offering.
Cruise Traveller managing director Joseph O’Sullivan said the combination of Mitsui’s authentic local knowledge, renowned vessel and immersive onboard experiences make the brand’s offering truly one of a kind.
“The feedback from agents and media has been incredibly positive,” O’Sullivan said. “In fact, this was probably the most successful famil we have run in over 30 years.”
Departing Tokyo on 14 April, the voyage featured a carefully curated itinerary that spanned iconic destinations and lesser-visited ports.
Destination highlights included the vibrant city of Busan in South Korea, the cultural hotspot of Wakayama, the charming coastal city of Saiki, and heritage-rich Toba city.
Signature Japanese hospitality
Mitsui Ocean Fuji‘s onboard atmosphere is underpinned by the Japanese philosophy of omotenashi, or wholehearted hospitality.
Dining is a focus of the luxury cruise line, with onboard menus celebrating seasonal ingredients and regional flavours, offering guests an authentic taste of Japan at sea.
O’Sullivan described the cuisine as the best he has experience at sea in many years.
“Experiencing authentic Japanese cuisine in an ultra-luxury setting is a key part of the full immersion that defines Mitsui Ocean Voyages,” he said.
An extra layer of cultural insight was added to the famil with advisors given the opportunity to connect with Japanese guests on board.
“Mixing with the Japanese guests on board was an absolute highlight. What better way to get an insight into Japan’s culture than travelling alongside Japanese guests,” Cruise Traveller BDM Laura Stone said.
As Japan continues to capture the consciousness of Australians, Mitsui Ocean Cruises is positioning itself as a high-end option for advisors catering to culturally curious clients, repeat cruisers seeking fresh experiences and authentic Japanese immersion.
