Gender Equality Scorecard reveals stark differences in pay at Aussie airlines

Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin Australia have been exposed as having some of the highest differences in pay between genders in the latest Gender Equality Scorecard.

The report, released by ‘Workplace Gender Equality Agency’ today provides an annual update on the state of workplace gender equality in Australia. It features the data and insights from WGEA’s annual Employer Census of private sector employers with 100 or more employees.

The newest report (for years 2022-23) highlights a whopping 53.3 per cent median gender pay gap at Jetstar, 41.7 per cent at Virgin and 39.3 per cent at Qantas. These results mean that for every dollar earned by a man, a woman at these companies earns 46.5 cents, 58.3 cents and 60.7 cents respectively.

Commonwealth Bank has a 29.8 per cent gap while IAG Insurance has a gap of 27.5 per cent.

Reports key points:

  • Only 22 per cent of CEOs are women
  • 42 per cent of managers are women
  • 30 per cent of women work part-time
  • 34 per cent of board members are women
  • 25 per cent of boards do not have a women

The 2022-23 WGEA Employer Census was the largest yet – capturing data from 5,135 employer reporting groups, covering 4,822,194 employees.

Collecting data on employee composition and pay, as well as workplace policies and practices, the WGEA Employer Census delivers the most comprehensive dataset on workplace gender equality in the world.
