With Western Sydney International set to open to passengers on 25 October, well ahead of the delayed Metro line, ground transport for the airport’s first year or more will rely on road and bus links rather than rail.
According to WSI’s endorsed Master Plan 2025-45, around 90 per cent of airport users are expected to travel by private vehicle at opening, reflecting the absence of a direct rail link in the airport’s first phase. Here is what will be available in 59 days’ time.
Parking
The toll-free M12 Motorway connects the airport precinct to the M7, and more than 6,000 parking spaces are being built, including EV charging bays and free pickup/drop-off zones, with online booking due to open in the second half of 2026.
Wilson parking will operate the more than 6,000 car spaces at WSI which encompass long and short-term parking. Dozens of Electric Vehicle charging bays will also be available, alongside secure covered parking and accessible parking options, while long stay parking is within a five-minute shuttle to the terminal.
WSI’s car park pricing schedule is currently being finalised and will be released in the coming months, which will enable passengers to book online well ahead of initial passenger services that will commence in October 2026.
Public transport
On public transport, Transport for NSW’s free WSI Link shuttle will run between the airport and St Marys station on the T1 Western Line every 30 minutes from 4.30am to midnight, Sunday to Thursday, and to 1am on Friday and Saturday. This temporary service will run once passenger flights begin and will operate until Sydney Metro services start.
Five permanent electric bus routes also began running to the airport from 5 July as part of the NSW Government’s AU$302.7 million Western Sydney bus investment, with additional free services linking Penrith, Liverpool, Campbelltown and Leppington to the terminal. Taxis and rideshare will also operate from the terminal forecourt.
Bus charter company NSBC Group will also operate Super Shuttle WSI to transfer passengers to and from the airport to the Parramatta CBD, Sydney CBD and Sydney Airport.
It features an electric, low-floor bus fleet currently being fitted out with luggage racks. Each vehicle will have seating for 37 people, accommodate two wheelchairs and have standing capacity. They will run in conjunction with WSI flight routes.
Car hire
Five car hire companies will also join operations at WSI, representing up to nine multinational brands, including Hertz, Avis, Redspot and Europcar.
WSI will serve as a gateway to some of Australia’s most popular driving holiday destinations including the Blue Mountains and Southern Highlands, WSI CEO Simon Hickey said.
“For visitors looking to explore Sydney and beyond, having convenient access to rental vehicles from the moment they arrive will make it easier to discover these iconic regions by road.”
Each of the major brands will have a kiosk within the terminal, serving both pre-booked and walk-up customers, in an integrated approach, allowing travellers to easily arrange transport on arrival.
In line with WSI’s focus on customer convenience and efficiency, vehicle collection will be in P1 – within a short two-to-three-minute walk from the terminal, swiftly connecting customers from aircraft to road to continue their journey.
