An investigation is underway after the bodies of two men were found inside the wheel well of a JetBlue plane that landed at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
A gate technician made the grisly discovery late Monday night after Airbus A320 had flown from New York’s JFK Airport as Flight 1801, arriving at 11:10 p.m. The bodies were found during a routine maintenance check shortly after landing.
Broward County Sheriff’s Office said that the men’s identities remain unknown and said the circumstances of how they accessed the aircraft are under investigation. The Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office will perform autopsies to determine the causes of death.
Law enforcement officials noted the bodies were in a state of decomposition.
“TSA is working closely with the airline, airport, FAA, and law enforcement officials and this incident remains under investigation,” a spokesperson for the Transportation Security Administration told CNN.
According to CNN, The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates JFK Airport, declined comment on the deaths.
