Hilton has lodged a proposal with the ACT government to build and operate a hotel and trade centre in Canberra.

The company revealed last week that it had formed a consortium with M20 and Ledrae Hotels, and lodged an unsolicited proposal to the ACT government, to build and operate Hilton Canberra, as well as a World Technology and Trade Centre.

The proposal is being formally assessed by the state government.

Hilton will manage the proposed Hilton Canberra, which it claims will be the Aussie capital’s first international, full-service hotel brand to welcome both business and leisure travellers.

“Canberra is an extremely important market, and Hilton would be honoured to have the opportunity to be able to offer our world-renown Hilton hospitality to travellers visiting our nation’s capital,” Rob Scullin, vice president for development across Australasia at Hilton, said.

The project, estimated to cost over $200 million, will include 253 guest rooms, including 18 spacious suites, a signature restaurant and bar, luxury retail outlets, a fitness centre, pool, spa facilities and meeting and event space.

An international hotel school and child care and learning centre, designed to host diplomatic services, technology, and trade-related providers, will be attached to the hotel.

The consortium is also proposing an international design competition as well as an energy-efficient building. This will include several innovations, including rain water management and recycling, rain water capture, smart glass panels, solar systems, as well as heat and ventilation systems.

The design aims to create a cool, comfortable environment for guests, with minimal impact on the environment.

Michael Kyriacou, director at Ledrae Hotels, said: “We are excited to bring such an iconic brand such as Hilton to our nation capital.

“The hotel will be a significant asset to the city, capitalising on the enormous growth in tourism – particularly the outbound tourism market and will help ACT compete with other global cities for major international conferences and events.”
