Hong Kong Airport “seriously disrupted” by ongoing protests, cancels all flights

One of the world’s busiest airports has halted all flights going in and out of Hong Kong, as mass protests continue to cause chaos across the destination.

A statement issued by Hong Kong International Airport at roughly 4pm local time said its operations “have been seriously disrupted”, and that “all flights have been cancelled”.

“All passengers are advised to leave the terminal buildings as soon as possible,” the statement read.

“Affected passengers please contact their respective airlines for flight arrangement.”

According to the statement, only departure flights that had completed the check-in process and arrival flights that are already heading to Hong Kong could continue, while all other flights had been cancelled for the rest of Monday.

According to a statement from Destination Asia Hong Kong, Tsing Ma Bridge is currently blocked by vehicles, with the only way to access the airport by Airport Express Railway.

“Destination Asia Hong Kong is in close contact with all agents with guests on the ground or scheduled to arrive in coming days,” the statement read.

“We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.”

The flight cancellations come as thousands of pro-democracy protesters have descended on Hong Kong’s international airport terminal for a fourth day of peaceful rallying.

It was only this time last week when thousands of pro-democracy protestors caused the cancellation of more than 200 flights at the same airport.
