HOTEL REVIEW: Meliá Chiang Mai, northern Thailand

Tucked along the banks of Chiang Mai’s Ping River, Meliá Chiang Mai blends sleek modern design with subtle nods to Spanish heritage and Northern Thai charm. With spacious rooms, a standout rooftop bar, and family-friendly facilities, it’s a smart city stay that doesn’t skimp on soul or views.

Welcome: 8/10

Check-in is smooth, the lobby is sleek, and the atmosphere feels quietly confident. No fanfare, no fuss, now fawning butlers, just a calm and contemporary welcome with soft lighting, polished service, and the gentle hum of a hotel that knows exactly what it’s doing. Guests staying in The Level rooms enjoy private check-in and an extra layer of personal attention at the exclusive Level Lounge.

Location: 9/10

Set beside the tranquil Ping River, Meliá Chiang Mai offers easy access to Chiang Mai’s vibrant old town, temples and night markets. However, the property feels removed enough to unwind. You’re close to the action but never overwhelmed by it. It’s also an ideal base for day tours to Chiang Mai’s misty mountain surrounds. A short drive takes you up to the iconic Doi Suthep Temple – one of Thailand’s most beautiful and sacred sites – where golden spires gleam above the clouds. From there, guests can continue on to the Long Neck Village, home to refugee communities who make their living through intricately crafted textiles and handmade souvenirs. It’s a meaningful way to connect with local culture and support artisan livelihoods.

Rooms: 8/10

Spacious and stylish, rooms are designed with both comfort and function in mind. There’s plenty of space to unpack, lounge, or sprawl out with the kids. The in-room coffee machine and minibar add an elevated touch, and the views – whether of the river or distant hills – are a real bonus. Guests in The Level rooms also enjoy a Nespresso machine and thoughtful extras like welcome fruit and nightly turndown.

Facilities: 8/10

Families are well taken care of here, with a fantastic kids’ club offering a warm, safe space full of toys, crafts and cartoons. The pool area is compact but relaxing, and the gym hits the essentials. Sadly, the spa was closed for renovations after recent flooding which was disappointing, but clearly in the works for a refreshed return. Meanwhile, Level Lounge guests can enjoy the sauna and steam room (with prior booking), as well as daily complimentary ironing.

Dining & Drinks: 8/10

Breakfast at Laan Na Kitchen blends Thai classics with Spanish flair. Think rice porridge and fresh mango next to cured meats and churros. But the real star is the Mai The Sky Bar, Chiang Mai’s tallest rooftop bar with 360-degree views. The river is on one side, misty mountains on the other. Grab a seat before sunset and order the Ping River (zesty and light) or the Three Kings (a bold, spicy nod to the city’s heritage). It’s the kind of setting that makes you forget your phone has a clock. Guests with The Level access also get a quieter, more refined start to the day with breakfast in the lounge, followed by afternoon tea, evening cocktails and canapés, all served with city views and a touch of calm.

Service: 8/10

Staff are kind, attentive, and always smiling. While not all team members speak fluent English, they’ll do their best to help, and there’s usually someone nearby who can assist if things get lost in translation. A little patience (and maybe Google Translate) goes a long way.

Overall: 8/10

Meliá Chiang Mai blends riverside calm with rooftop glamour in one of Thailand’s most charming cities. It’s a thoughtful, well-run base for families, couples, and culture-lovers alike. Spacious rooms, a great kids’ club, and that unbeatable rooftop bar set it apart. The Level experience adds another tier of comfort, with a private lounge, daily perks, and concierge-style service that makes your stay feel seamless. It’s not about flash, it’s about comfort, convenience, and that moment at sunset when the mountains start to glow and your cocktail hits just right.
