First impression
The Sukhothai Bangkok, part of the small luxury hotels of the world, has created a sophisticated and personalised approach to hotel stays. From the very first impression, this vision is realised by the long driveway that welcomes us after our long flight. There is always something glamorous about a long tree-lined driveway, isn’t there?
The entrance is welcoming with its cool exteriors on a hot and humid Bangkok day. Designed by Kerry Hill Architects, it’s a nod to traditional Thai with a modern touch. An oriental design combined with world-class and modern hotel facilities that suit the business traveller and the tourist without one imposing on the other. The simple lines are given an exotic touch with local art, design and fabulous oriental gardens.
Location
The Sukhothai Bangkok is on South Sathorn road, just a few minutes walk to Lumpini MRT Subway station. Don Mueang and Suvannabhumi International Airport are approximately 25 km away or 40 minutes in a cab when traffic is flowing.
The Sukhothai Bangkok is located in an energetic and lively part of Bangkok, close to the hustle and bustle with plenty of bars and restaurants on your doorstep.
We actually hardly left the hotel, luxuriating by its spectacular pool and enjoying the service there. Cabanas are provided with fans to cool you down and if travelling for business, it is quite easy to work under the cabana while enjoying fresh juices and delicious snacks.
Rooms
Does the bed have a flat sheet? Yes!
Having a flat sheet, almost always missing in hotels these days is a must for me. We have found that often they don’t have them in housekeeping which is a simple thing hotels can do for the environment given the alternative is sleeping under a doona and having the air-conditioning blaring. Thankfully, The Sukhothai Bangkok had them as well as a luxurious bed and choice of pillows.
All rooms, suites in the private club lounge overlook views the pool and gardens and are large and spacious. The property is refined and elegant and the hotel offers a variety of contemporary guest rooms and suites.
Club Lounge
When you stay in in the The Sukhothai Bangkok Club Wing, you also enjoy access to the Club Lounge. If you are not a fan of buffet like us, you can order a freshly made a la carte breakfast here and the omelette we had was delicious. We also enjoyed afternoon tea and cocktails in the lounge while there. Staying in the club lounge has a number of benefits if you are tired and travelling for business.
A separate check-in desk which makes check-in simple and quick is very appealing and post-check-in you are escorted up to your guest room by reception staff. The club also offers a private meeting room for up to six people and complimentary non-alcoholic beverages all-day
Drinking and dining
There are a number of restaurants to choose from but we like to eat local when we travel so we had dinner at Celedon which has an extensive modern Thai menu for the sophisticated pallet. It does not disappoint, and the food was delicious.
Among our favourite choices were phak boong faidaeng kapi (stir fried morning glory with fried garlic, chilli and shrimp paste) and goong maenaam yaang thaan lon koeysod (grilled river prawns with salted baby shrimps and fresh coconut milk) All the dishes were delicious, the menu a collection fragrant curries and fresh flavours. We highly recommend you eat there at least once.
Health and wellness
No luxury hotel is complete without a Spa and Spa Botanica delivers wellness and pampering to soothe your senses.
Asian-inspired therapies in the treatment rooms range from specific body treatments to facials and massages.
Verdict: 10/10
For me, travelling a lot for business and pleasure, the first impression is important and the quality of the room and beds critical. The Sukhothai Bangkok ticked all those boxes.
The pool was superb and while being away from home a lot can be hard, being welcome into an oasis such as The Sukhothai Bangkok makes it all worthwhile.
Travellers can expect excellent resort facilities, sophisticated and well-considered art and design aesthetics and well-appointed stylish rooms.
