Hyatt has announced the opening of Caption by Hyatt Central Sydney, marking the debut of the innovative Caption by Hyatt brand in Australia.

Located in the heart of Haymarket, the 174-room hotel blends community-first hospitality, tech-enabled convenience, and locally inspired design, creating a dynamic space for both travellers and locals to connect.

Leading the property is general manager Temara Exton, who brings over 20 years of international hospitality experience across the United States, Asia Pacific, and Australia. Known for her inclusive leadership style and expertise in elevating guest experiences, Temara is recognised for bringing brands to life in the lifestyle and luxury space.

She now leads the launch of Caption by Hyatt Central Sydney, introducing the brand to the Australian market as a vibrant new destination that connects travellers and locals alike. She is joined by Peter Roach, director of sales & marketing, who oversees the hotel’s commercial strategy with a strong focus on community partnerships, brand positioning, and creating experiences that connect locals and travellers alike.

“Caption by Hyatt Central Sydney is more than just a hotel,” Exton said. “It’s a place where locals and travellers can feel at home, connect, share ideas, and be part of the vibrant neighbourhood of Haymarket and Central Sydney.”

What to expect

Caption by Hyatt Central Sydney introduces a fresh approach to lifestyle travel – a place where guests are empowered to create their own experiences, from seamless mobile check-in to guestrooms designed for flexibility and comfort. At the heart of the hotel is Talk Shop, a lively all-day social hub combining café, bar, workspace, and community venue, designed to foster genuine connection and collaboration.

Chef Yammi Cheung introduces a playful food philosophy to the hotel built around “Healthy vs Indulgent” with a menu designed for every mood. Signature highlights include the Double-Down Burger, Krapow Burger, Mee So Salmon Bowl, and the Plain Gainz Bowl and House Iced Teas with the option to spike for a little fun with your spirit of choice.

Talk Shop’s menu reflects Sydney’s multicultural energy, all served in a relaxed, social dining setting with QR-based ordering for convenience. The social dining philosophy ensures Talk Shop works as an approachable all-day social hub and a local evening hangout, positioning Caption by Hyatt Sydney as a local destination for both guests and Sydneysiders.

As part of its hyper-local integration, Caption by Hyatt Central Sydney has partnered with renowned Sydney artist Chris Yee, whose bold, contemporary illustrations bring the streets of Haymarket into the hotel’s lobby and common spaces, creating an immersive sense of place. Complementing his work are pieces by Melbourne based creative Samy Baby and Japanese Australian artist Hiromi Tango, adding diverse perspectives and energy to the hotel’s design.

  • Chris Yee – Vibrant graphic illustrations featured throughout guest rooms and social spaces, inspired by Haymarket’s rich heritage and street culture.
  • Samy Baby – Bespoke wallpaper designs paying homage to the neighbourhood’s iconic energy and diversity.
  • Hiromi Tango – A public art installation symbolising community connection and creative expression.

“My work for Caption by Hyatt Central Sydney is inspired by the streets, energy, people and history of Haymarket,” Yee said. “This neighbourhood has always been a melting pot of storytelling, culture, food, and creativity – and I wanted the artwork to reflect that spirit, bringing the local vibe directly into the hotel.”

Sustainability at its core

Designed with sustainability at its core, the hotel champions responsible practices, including locally sourced food and beverages, energy-efficient smart technology, and zero-waste initiatives. The interior design by Mitchell & Eades pushes the boundaries for what we know as ‘recycled, re-purposed and re-used’. The design encourages guests to form authentic engagement with local artists, makers and creators and develop greater connections and community.
