IHG Hotels & Resorts (IHG) has announced it will bring the InterContinental luxury hotel brand to Papua New Guinea with a 179-key hotel to open in Port Moresby in late 2028.

InterContinental Port Moresby will join IHG’s growing presence in PNG, which includes Holiday Inn Port Moresby, Holiday Inn Express Port Moresby and Crowne Plaza Residences Port Moresby.

In a partnership with Gulf Province Properties Limited (GPPL), a subsidiary company of the Gulf Investment Trust Fund, InterContinental Port Moresby is set to be the centrepiece of a landmark mixed-use development in the heart of the capital city’s diplomatic precinct and the seat of National Government.

The 179-room hotel will be located moments from the National Parliament House, the Supreme and National Court, Key Central Agencies of Government, and several foreign embassies – and will be perfectly positioned to welcome visiting dignitaries, business travellers, and international guests.

The offering will include an all-day dining restaurant, specialty restaurant, lobby lounge and pool bar, alongside more than 600sqm of meeting and event space, a Club Lounge, fitness centre and outdoor pool.

The wider development will offer 6,000sqm of office space, creating a new commercial and social hub for the city.

As the nation’s capital continues to strengthen its position on the regional and global stage, InterContinental Port Moresby will set a new standard for luxury hospitality,” IHG Hotels & Resorts managing director, Australasia & Pacific, Matt Tripolone, said.

“Papua New Guinea’s capital is entering an exciting new era of growth, underpinned by large-scale LNG investments as well as the forthcoming launch of the country’s first NRL team in 2028.

“These developments are driving strong demand for world-class hospitality, making this the ideal time to introduce the InterContinental brand to the market.”

Hon. Grand-Chief Sir Chris Haiveta, GCL KCMG & MP, Governor of Gulf Province and Chairman of Gulf Province Properties Limited, said it was a proud moment for Papua New Guinea.

“Partnering with IHG to introduce its prestigious InterContinental brand reflects our confidence in the future of Port Moresby and the Gulf Province,” he said. “InterContinental Port Moresby will be a destination that welcomes leaders, travellers and guests from around the world in a true Melanesian spirit of Papua New Guinea.”

The addition of InterContinental strengthens IHG’s position as the largest international hotel operator in the country, with a wide-ranging portfolio covering many market segments. The signing continues the regional and global growth of IHG, one of the world’s leading hotel companies, renowned for its sophistication, heritage and cultural connection.

Across Australasia and the Pacific, IHG’s Luxury & Lifestyle portfolio includes 16 open InterContinental hotels and two pipeline properties, contributing to a global presence of more than 230 open hotels, with another 100 in development.
