The ATSB is investigating two separate runway overruns on take-off involving an Airbus A330, registered 9M-MTL, on 7 September 2023, and a Boeing 787-9, registered VN-A819, on 18 September 2023, at Melbourne Airport, Victoria.
At the time of each occurrence, runway 34 at Melbourne Airport was temporarily shortened for runway overlay works.
During the respective night take-offs from runway 34, each aircraft reportedly rotated past the temporary displaced threshold resulting in jet blast affecting people and objects in the work area. There were no reported physical injuries.
There was no damage reported from the 9M-MTL occurrence, but several unserviceability lights were damaged by the jet blast of VN-A819.
In response, Melbourne Airport stopped any works that require a displaced threshold on runway 16/34 pending further investigation.
The evidence collection phase of the investigation will involve retrieving and reviewing recorded data, interviewing involved parties, and the collection of other relevant information.
A final report will be released at the conclusion of the investigation. Should a critical safety issue be identified during the course of the investigation, the ATSB will immediately notify relevant parties, so that appropriate safety action can be taken.
