Deep in one of Bhutan’s most picturesque valleys sits &Beyond Punakha River Lodge, an intimate, design-driven retreat that marks the brand’s first lodge in Asia. Positioned along the Mo Chu River and surrounded by terraced fields and forested hills, the lodge offers a calm, grounded way to experience one of the world’s most beautiful destinations.

Bhutan is known for its Himalayan landscapes, centuries-old traditions and a national philosophy centred on Gross National Happiness. It’s a place that naturally slows you down, and Punakha is one of its most beautiful regions: warm, lush and full of history. The lodge sits in the heart of it all, with views that stretch across the river toward rolling hills and distant peaks.

Accommodation leans heavily into craftsmanship. The lodge’s six tented suites sit beneath traditional Bhutanese timber frames, combining contemporary comfort with touches of local artistry. Handwoven Bhutanese wool blankets and upholstery bring texture and colour to each room, while brass-cladded bathtubs and painted woodwork highlight the country’s design heritage. Villas take things up a level: the two-bedroom option includes its own pool, while the one-bedroom villa offers a seasonal plunge pool or hot tub, ideal for soaking under cool mountain air.

The spa mirrors the slow, restorative rhythm of Punakha. Treatments draw on Bhutanese healing traditions and can be arranged indoors or right on the riverbank. Morning yoga, open-air massages and guided meditation are part of the daily offering, all designed to make the most of the lodge’s peaceful setting.

One of the standout elements here is the team. General Manager Rishi Sharma has personally handpicked a group of exceptionally warm, intuitive staff who operate put guests right at ease. The service and attention to detail is what makes this lodge feel so personal.

Dining is another highlight. The food is fresh, colourful and full of local flavour, supported by an expansive food and wine menu that covers everything from Bhutanese staples to refined international dishes. A personal favourite is the Indian menu which embodies the Bhutanese flavours. Much of the produce comes from the lodge’s own organic vegetable garden or nearby community farms, giving each meal a connection to the valley. Long al fresco lunches, surprise drinks stops and beautifully arranged picnics are all part of the experience.

Location-wise, it doesn’t get better. From the lodge, guests can walk straight to the trail leading up to Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Chorten, one of Punakha’s most scenic hikes. The iconic Punakha Dzong is only a short drive away, as is Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Nunnery. For those wanting more adventure, river rafting, kayaking, cycling and guided nature walks are easily arranged.

&Beyond Punakha River Lodge redefines luxury as something thoughtful, grounded and deeply connected to place. With genuine hospitality and a setting that invites you to slow down, it offers a new kind of high-end experience, one that feels personal, considered and unmistakably Bhutanese.
